Is Biden losing his grip … and the nomination?

Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders recently claimed that he still has a path to the Democrat presidential nomination.  Just a couple weeks ago, such a statement would have sounded preposterous – but not so much today.  It is not because Sanders is looking any better, but because his opponent, former Vice President Joe Biden, is looking worse by the minute.

The Democrat establishment got what it wanted –to winnow down the presidential field to one likely candidate and to derail Sanders.

No sooner had former Vice President Joe Biden all but secured the nomination than reality set in.  And what is that reality?  Put simply, Biden is a terrible candidate and is looking more like the big loser of 2020.

Actually, the COVID-19 virus gave Biden a huge benefit.  He does not have to go out in public and give speeches and make impromptu comments.  He does not have to risk a heart attack by proving his virality by breaking out in a run for 20 feet or so at parades.

Biden is safely ensconced in his recently constructed basement studio with all the homey props – including a large bookshelf.  The only thing that bothers me is that flag in the triangular case on the left side of the screen – the kind of flag that is sadly displayed by loved-ones of those who died in defense of our nation.  My family has one for my Marine grandson who died in Afghanistan.  I would be more than anger if Biden’s was just a political prop.  It would almost constitute theft of valor.  But I digress.

Issuing prepared statements read from teleprompters should have given Biden a gaffe-free way to address the nation.  But even spared the risk of real campaigning, Biden is not looking good.  He is looking – and sounding – old.  He still makes an occasion gaffe – often appearing to be one of those “senior moments.”  He cannot stop them because they are part of who he is – or how he is.

In addition, Biden still has a lot of political baggage hanging over his head – held up there by the obsessive COVID-19 coverage.  Once that restraint is gone, there are any number of negative issues that will gain traction.

The reason Sanders may … just may … have a path to the nomination is because an increasing number of Democrat establishmentarians have come to the conclusion that Biden needs to be replaced.  The question is how? — and who?  Of course, they still cannot allow the nomination to fall to Sanders.  They see that as replacing one loser with another.

The notion of replacing Biden is so serious that a number of Democrat leaders got a tingle up their leg for New York Governor Andrew Cuomo – who has been appearing on television more than Biden and Sanders combined.  Even though Cuomo has expressed disinterest, the speculation still simmers.  Is Cuomo’s disinterest real or just a strategic recognition that he cannot throw his hat in the ring while New Yorkers are dying in record numbers.

Some Democrats have whispered the name of Michael Bloomberg.  He does not have a lot of delegates, but he does have a LOT of money to spend in the General Election.

If Biden is to be pushed to the curb, the “who” may be less important than the “how.”  In that regard, there seems to be only one option.  Can the establishment stop Biden from getting the prerequisite number of delegates to secure the nomination BEFORE the convention – which has been moved from July to August.

Ironically, the only apparent way to stop Biden from gaining the nomination before the convention is for Sanders to do remarkably better in the upcoming primaries – and that is not as foolish a notion as it may sound at first blush.

The delay of the primaries and Biden’s emerging weakness may have voters considering a vote for Sanders.  It could bring out more of his people.

Also, even the later primaries will have a chilling effect on voter turnout.  Recent polling shows that 70 percent of the voters have anxieties about going out in public during this lockdown period – even to vote.  You can only imagine how long the lines will be if primary voters must stand six feet apart.

It is arguable that older voters and black voters would be the most likely to stay at home – and those are key demographics for Biden.  As we have seen on the news, younger folks – those most likely to favor Sanders – are not afraid to come out in public.

But how ironic is it that the only way to replace Biden may be to build up Sanders in the upcoming primaries.  And then to stop the even stronger Sanders at the convention.

While we cannot say with any certainty how the COVID-19 will impact on the Democrat primary, we can rest assured that there will be an impact.  We just cannot predict an outcome based on something that has never happened before.

While Sanders has not laid out the specifics of his path to the nomination, I assume it rests on a brokered convention – and that prospect is a wee bit more possible than it was a couple of weeks ago.

We can be quite certain, however, that politics is going to get a lot nastier – especially the attacks on Trump.  If Democrats believe that they cannot beat Trump by building up their candidate, they will have only one alternative option – bring down Trump.

Still, the odds remain with Biden for the presidential nomination – no matter how much he takes on the mantle of a loser.

So, there ‘tis.
