Farewell to Chris Matthews

Farewell to Chris Matthews

MSNBC’s Chris Matthews – one of the icons of left-wing media – has announced his retirement.  The 74-year-old political commentator announced his retirement on his primetime “Hardball” show – a program he has hosted for some 20 years.

Matthews never pretended to be anything but a liberal Democrat – even though the media described him as a “centrist.”  Salon.com called Matthews the most conservative voice on MSNBC.  Of course, that is only relative to the lineup at MSNBC, where the radical left dominates the daily schedule.

The extremely left-wing Media Matters accused Matthews of providing a platform for guests on the political right – and often defending Republicans with his own comments.  That criticism reflects the left’s desire to totally shut out conservative opinion more than a right-wing bias by Matthews.  He functioned as a dyed-in-the-wool liberal Democrat.  In fact, it was almost impossible to find a counterpoint on his shows to left-wing narratives and talking points.

Like many media personalities, Matthews jumped back and forth between being a political operative and a member of the Fourth Estate.  At times during his long career, he was a staff aide to Democrat members of Congress – including six years as chief-of-staff to House Speaker Tip O’Neill.  He made an unsuccessful run for Congress from Pennsylvania in 1974.

It has been reported that Matthew’s retirement may not have been entirely voluntary.  Sources close to the situation – unnamed, of course – said that Matthews was booted.

Matthews had a reputation as a guy who did not always behave himself with women.  His departure was partly the result of the #MeToo Movement.  Laura Bassett, of GQ Magazine, recently accused Matthews of making sexist remarks when she appeared as a guest on “Hardball” in 2016.

Matthews did not deny his randy past.  He said, “Compliments on a woman’s appearance that some men, including me, might have once incorrectly thought were okay, were never okay. Not then and certainly not today. And for making such comments in the past, I’m sorry.”

To say Matthews tended to be arrogant and opinionated is an understatement.  He got some blowback when he compared Bernie Sanders’ early lead in Nevada as the Nazi invasion of France in World War II.  He was widely mocked for saying that Barack Obama caused a tingle to rise in his leg.

MSNBC’s political number counter, Steve Kornacki, was tapped to temporarily take over the show.  Whether that will be made permanent is unknown at this time.  We should hope not.  Kornacki is one of the best election night analysts in cable news – and remarkably objective considering his employer.  It is reasonable to fear that hosting               any show on MSNBC may mold Kornacki into just another left-wing propagandist for the network.

Matthews will be missed – like a shoe with a stone in it.

So, there ‘tis.
