Progressive Fantasies … and Other Fairytales

As a young lad attending Catholic elementary school was introduced to a word … transubstantiation.  It had to do with holy communion.  Basically, it meant that once the bread and wine were blessed by the priest, they became the flesh and blood of Christ.  It was not ritualistic symbolism, but we were to believe that we were consuming the real thing.

I never could wrap my head around it – notwithstanding the implications of cannibalism.  I was told to believe – as a matter of faith – two things that did not make sense to me.  It was still bread and wine and, if you believed in transubstantiation, it was still not cannibalism.  The priests would dismiss any skepticism with “it’s a mystery.”  It certainly was.

It seems to me that one of the underpinnings of progressive philosophy is political transubstantiation.  They want us to believe what they tell us rather than what is factual – what we can see with own eyes or deduce with our own brain.  In a non-theology analogy, I feel like the radical left is like Chico Marx in the movie Duck Soup, in which he says, “Well, who you gonna believe – me or your own eyes?”

A recent example comes from former Vice President Joe Biden.  When asked if he thought it was a  problem that the impeachment was so partisan.  Of all the explanations that a good politician can concoct, Biden dipped into the vault of transubstantiation.  “It was not partisan.”

Remember, not a single Republican in the House voted for impeachment.  Only Democrats did.  That, by definition, is partisan … period.  In Biden’s view, it was not partisan just because no Republicans went along.  That was his explanation.

But that was not just an outlier comment by a Democrat elder.  A good chunk of Democrats has long claimed that President Trump is not a “legitimate” president even though there is not a scintilla of evidence that his election was stolen in any way – nor was it achieved by the Russians.

While there a great deal of talk about Russian interference, virtually everyone – from President Obama on down – has Russkis clearly stated that the did not change any votes or affect the outcome.  People may not like Trump, but we should at least be able to agree that he is the legitimate President.

In the aftermath of the failed impeachment on the dubious allegations of Abuse of Power and Obstructions of Congress, the folks on the left are saying that Trump was not exonerated – not even acquitted – by the Senate.  Recently, even House Speaker Nancy Pelosi claimed that Trump was NOT acquitted.

Of course, the Senate had two options – to convict and remove Trump from office or to acquit.  Under our legal traditions, a person is “innocent until PROVEN guilty.”  One may not like the outcome, but an acquittal is an acquittal … period.  And the President was acquitted.

During one Sunday show, panelists said that Stacey Abrams was actually elected governor of Georgia in 2018.  Mind you, not “should have been elected” or even “the election was stolen” but WAS elected. That is a strange contention since Brian Kemp has been serving a Governor of the Peach State for the past couple years – having been elected by a 55,000-vote margin.  In the meantime, Abrams has been cruising around looking for another political office.

Most of the left-wing narratives that you see reported by their crony media pals require a leap of faith – a belief without evidence or even that defies the evidence.

For more than two years, the left-wing political/media combine was very certain in their allegation that Trump, his family, and the campaign staff criminally colluded with Russian operatives – with Intelligence Chairman Adam Schiff even saying that he had seen the positive proof in secret committee sessions.  That bit of political fantasy ended when the Mueller Report completely exonerated the President – and his family and staff.

Progressives want us to believe that a child in the womb is not a human being even though the dismembered body parts in late-term abortions look a lot like a human being.  Another Chico Marx schtick.

In self-identification, progressives tell us that our gender is simply what we say it is rather than the genitalia with which we were born.  I have no problem with how people prefer to dress or feel – or express their sexuality — but as long as they retain their standard equipment, that is what they are. It is just a matter of ignoring science in favor of political dogma – blind belief.

Democrats extoll the benefits of socialism even though they cannot cite any examples where it has worked.  In fact, the greater the influences of socialism, the greater the human suffering – and there are enough examples of that.

Study after study proves that there are no long-term benefits in raising the minimum wage.  In fact, its most consistent impact is to reduce the number of jobs – increasing unemployment.  Yet, it is a mainstay of the snake oil sales pitch of the Democratic Party.

It would require a sizeable book to catalog all the belief-based narratives of the left.  The entire political philosophy is aspirational – not rational.  It is more about how things could be – in an imaginary sense – as opposed to how they are and will be.

Left-wing socialism is an enticing doctrine because it alludes to a world of human happiness and perfection but delivers the opposite because it – itself – is a grand lie.  Virtually everything that is good in the world today – personal freedom, prosperity, good health, living wages, social interconnection, education, world travel, and representative government – have been provided by conservative, limited-government capitalism.  Progressivism has brought nothing but human suffering and divisiveness.

It would seem the choice would be easily made.  But apparently, a belief in the benefits of snake oil still has sales appeal.

So, there ‘tis.
