Sanders’ Las Vegas Gamble Paid Off

Sanders’ Las Vegas Gamble Paid Off

There is no doubt about it.  Vermont Senator and America’s favorite socialist Bernie Sanders flew out of Las Vegas a big winner.  He not only won the caucus primary… he hit the jackpot in Las Vegas.

Sanders not only crushed former Vice President Joe Biden, but he won more votes than Biden, Buttigieg, Warren,  Klobuchar and Steyer combined – almost attaining a clear majority.  Not an easy thing in a multicandidate field.

Even though Sanders trounced Biden by more than two-to-one, he did not knock Biden out of an ever-weakening claim to be the moderate champion against the left-wing revolutionary.  Placing even a poor second still put Biden ahead of the others who are trying to credibly claim to be the leader of the Stop Bernie Movement within the Democratic Party.

Sanders’ victory is not only surprising because of the magnitude, but he appears to have won among almost every polling group – blacks, Hispanics, women, young, etc.  His major loss was among folks over 65 years old.

This suggests that my contention in earlier commentaries – that Bloomberg would not automatically pick up the Biden, Buttigieg and Klobuchar voters should they drop out.  Based on his rising numbers in South Carolina – where approximately 50 percent of the vote will come from the black community – and his support among blacks in Nevada – Sanders is likely to get a good share of the votes when any of the so-called moderates drop out.

Like Biden, Warren should have done better in Nevada to maintain credibility as a contender – and possibly reverse her money drain.  Her tough debate performance in Las Vegas did not translate at the political gaming tables.  She did as well, or as poorly, as expected – depending on your perspective.

That may be because the debate took place AFTER most Nevada caucus participants had already voted early.  Mark up another planning screw-up by the folks at the Democratic National Committee.

For Biden, South Carolina is payback time.  He needs to win big over Sanders.  Should Sanders come in a close second, Biden will march on to Super Tuesday three days later as a still wounded warrior.  Should Sanders win South Carolina, the only thing that can stop him from taking the Democrat nomination for President would be a Hail Mary pass to former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

As a footnote, it should be recognized that if the nomination is decided by a brokered convention, it is POSSIBLE – not likely, but possible – that the Democrat standard-bearer would be none of those who ran the gauntlet in the primaries.  It has happened before.

While it is true that only a very small – minuscule — number of the 1991 delegates needed to secure the nomination has been decided, Sanders is performing better than expected.  It is becoming increasingly clear that he is the man to beat – and getting perilously close to being unbeatable.

So, there ‘tis.
