It doesn’t get any sicker than this…

Milwaukee high school teacher, Travis Sarandos, was suspended after posting a tweet about Rush Limbaugh dying on social media.

According to local affiliate WISN 12 News, Sarandos teaches English at Milwaukee High School of the Arts and has since deleted his Twitter account, @travis MKE.

The incident began when the conservative talk show icon announced earlier this week that he has been diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer.

That stunning announcement prompted a huge response all across social media; most responders voiced their heartfelt support for the 69-year old conservative legend, while others expressed their utter contempt and scorn for the radio personality.

One particular individual expressed hope that Limbaugh would hopefully recover and begin advocating for affordable health care, which apparently set off Sarandos who tweeted out his vile wish, “Limbaugh absolutely should have to suffer from cancer. It’s awesome that he’s dying, and hopefully, it is as quick as it is painful.”

The school district acknowledged it was aware of the tweet stating; “We are aware of Mr. Sarandos’ actions and can confirm that he was not speaking on behalf of any students or staff of Milwaukee High School of the Arts or Milwaukee Public Schools,” district spokeswoman Shahree Douglas said in a statement to WISN. “The district is following policy and procedures related to personnel matters.”

Hours later it confirmed he had been placed on leave pending an investigation.

The perverse tweet drew some backlash from conservative listeners on Tuesday, after conservative radio host Mark Belling reported the incident. However, when WITI-TV began to report the incident on TV, a groundswell of protests began to erupt.

Moreover, some enterprising reporter over at the TV station actually captured a screenshot of another Sarandos tweet that read: “I was in the room when my grandpa died of lung cancer, and my grandma nearly lost her house paying for his end-of-life costs because of people like Rush Limbaugh, who thinks being poor should be a death sentence. You can [redacted] all the way off.”

The media dust-up also drew the attention of Milwaukee Republican Alderman Bob Donovan, who demanded that Sarandos be disciplined for his sickening remarks.

“It would be easy enough to dismiss ill-written, juvenile nonsense like this were it not for his role in teaching our city’s young people,” Donovan said in a news release, WISN said. “He is supposed to be an example of the inclusive, tolerant, and respectful spirit of the Milwaukee Public Schools. He is clearly nothing of the sort.”

Donovan also told WISN on camera, “Let’s just say that some right-winger was attacking some liberal. And let’s just say this same right-winger was attacking Muslims. This guy would’ve been gone in a heartbeat. But it seems to be OK to attack conservatives.”

However, Sarandos contempt didn’t end with Limbaugh, in one of the tweets he suggests the extinction of Christian conservative voters if “maybe we poison the communion wine?”

“I regret the statements,” Sarandos told WITI. “It was meant as a joke, but it was in very poor taste. I do not have any further comment.”

Limbaugh announced the devastating news on his Monday show, telling his huge listening audience that his doctors had diagnosed he had stage 4 lung cancer, at that he would be taking some time off from his broadcasting duties

“Ladies and gentlemen, this day has been one of the most difficult days in recent memory for me because I’ve known this moment was coming in the program today,” Limbaugh said toward the end of the show. “I’m sure you all know by now, I really don’t like talking about myself, and I don’t like making things about me other than in the usual satirical, joking way.”

Limbaugh continued; “So I have to tell you something today that I wish I didn’t have to tell you,” he continued, pausing several times. “It’s a struggle for me because I had to inform my staff earlier today.”

He finally said that “the upshot is that I have been diagnosed with advanced lung cancer.”

Perhaps it’s the optimist in me or the fact that I believe in happy endings, thus I present cancer survivor Todd Shoemaker.

“I can’t believe it’s been 10 years that I went from planning my funeral – to planning my running schedule.”

“You’re going to need more than just the medical science,” Shoemaker said. “My faith, my family and friends, and my medical team – I mean they got me through the last 17-and-a-half years.”
