Democrats Have Kept Their Promises

Democrats Have Kept Their Promises

Looking back at the record since the election of President Trump, I must admit that the Democrats have kept their promises.

Immediately after Trump concluded his oath of office with the words, “so help me God,” Democrats promised that they would impeach him.  Actually, the calls for impeachment came after his November 2016 election – after having failed to get Trump’s Electoral College electors to break faith and vote for Hillary and then failing to persuade incoming Congress to block the inauguration.

During the transition period, zany California Congresswoman Maxine Waters was the point person on impeachment.  Among the earliest bills to be filed in Congress was the impeachment bill proposed by Texas Democrat Congressman Al Green — other similar bills followed in succeeding years.

Billionaire businessman Tom Steyer launched a multimillion-dollar advertising campaign directed at impeaching Trump.  The primary objective, however, was to lay the ground for his own presidential run.  On the heels of the 2017 Inauguration, the Washington Post featured an article headlined “The Campaign to Impeach Trump has Begun.”  The Post knew that because they get their information from the Democrats.

As the groundwork for impeachment – and further fulfillment of the promise—Democrats, including high-level Washington establishment officials, drew on their “insurance policy” to mount a long baseless investigation alleging that the Trump campaign had criminally colluded with Russian interference in the 2016 election – although virtually everyone, including President Obama, assured that nation that none of the Russian interference influenced or changed the outcome of the election.

In the mid-term campaigns of 2018, Democrats made more promises they ultimately kept.  They promised to advance their impeachment objective by using their new power in the House of Representatives to launch a dizzying array of investigations.  Democrats who once presided over “regulation nation” were now creating “investigation nation.”

Of course, impeachment was still the primary goal.  This was best(?) articulated by newly-minted Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib, who told her young son – in a “Mommy Dearest” moment — that her mission in Congress was to “impeach the mother****er.”

As the 2020 election drew near, it looked as though the Democrats might fail in their number one policy objective – impeachment.  Like the lyrics to “September Song,” — “… the days dwindle down to a precious few … September, November …” — the Democrats had to strike even if they had neither the best case nor enough time.  It did not matter if they could not find a real crime.  It did not matter if they could not get any bipartisan support – and even if they lost a few non-obsessed Democrats.  But they promised an impeachment to their radical #NeverTrump base, and, by God, they were going to deliver.

You must give them credit.  Democrats may make very bad and destructive promises, but they keep them no matter how damaging they are to the nation.

So, there ‘tis.
