Down With TSA!

From my Department of Full Disclosure, let me say right off the bat that I have never been a fan of federal airport security screening.

I’m old enough to remember when private companies performed these services just as poorly as the federal agency forced upon the nation in a time of egregious distress.

Heck, I’m old enough to remember when airport screening consisted of tossing a suitcase on a conveyor belt to pass through a baggage check and waltzing through a stand-up metal detector, quick and easy.

Two months after the attacks on U.S. soil on September 11, 2001, the Aviation and Transportation Security Act became law in November 2001. This post-apocalyptic legislation authorized creating the brand new Department of Homeland Security (DHS) which, in turn, spawned the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).

Thus, TSA was born from the shock and awe created by the horrific events of 9/11. TSA has been controversial since its operational rollout in early 2002. The federal government under George W. Bush, who presided in the Oval Office between 2001 and 2009, sprang into action and began waging its unending and unwinnable War on Terror.

As many people know, “Dubya” is the son of George Herbert Walker Bush who served as the U.S. Commander-in-Chief from 1989 to 1993. Both spoke publicly of bringing a “New World Order” to the United States to help govern the world “democratically.” This New World Government began to militarize police forces across the land and beef up “national security” measures regardless of how useless they proved themselves to be.

The first TSA operatives deployed in a few select national airports in early 2002. That year, TSA hired more than 50,000 new Transportation Security Screeners, Lead Screeners, Supervisory Screeners, and Screener Managers to identify and eliminate “threats” to airline transportation safety. Threats came from passengers and their luggage – carry on and checked bags.

There was employment trouble from the start: starting in 2002, upper management refused to allow screeners to perform the duties they were hired to do and put lower-grade workers into “acting” positions at higher levels. Leads and Managers were forced to “act” as basic Screeners and take orders from paid Screeners were elevated by paid Managers to carry out higher-level functions. These “acting” Leads, Supervisors and even Managers operated three levels above their hiring grades.

From the get-go, TSA screeners enjoyed none of “the full range of salary and job benefits given to most other federal employees, including all the other staffers at the brand-new TSA: It said the agency administrator had the right to ’employ, appoint, discipline, terminate, and fix the compensation’ of ‘such a number of individuals as the Under Secretary determines to be necessary to carry out the screening functions’ laid out under the bill.”

TSA screeners have repeatedly failed federal threat detection tests. Yet, taxpayers must continue to pony up the exorbitant expense to keep this farcical agency full steam ahead. The 2020 budget for TSA amounts to slightly over $7 BILLION:

“From FY 2008 through FY 2018, a total of $6,904,035.98 has been left behind, including a record $960,105.49 in FY 2018.”

What has 14 billion dollars gotten us U.S. taxpayers concerned about safe air travel? We can only guess – because TSA never reports their successes and failures because that information might jeopardize – you guessed it – “national security.”

Consider these shocking facts and professional conclusions about the uselessness of TSA:

“In 2017, Homeland Security inspectors were able to transport facsimile firearms, explosives and knives through TSA checkpoints an appalling 70 percent of the time. This is not only unacceptable but calls into question the effectiveness of the TSA. Many experts, in fact, have long criticized the TSA as ‘security theater,’ noting that body scanners are largely ineffective at detecting common explosive materials.”

On November 8, 2017, members of the House Committee on Homeland Security were advised of TSA security vulnerabilities by the Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Inspector General (OIG) and the TSA administrator in a classified briefing.

The news was not good. Security screeners repeatedly and consistently failed to detect even the most basic and elementary threat items – such as the distinctive x-ray profiles of a handgun or large-bladed hunting knife. Equipment malfunctioned regularly and took ages to repair.

Afterward, Committee Chairman Rep. Michael McCaul shared his unease about the situation:

“Quite frankly, I think I speak for all of us when I say that we found that briefing disturbing.”

Rep. Mike Rogers told TSA Administrator David Pekoske the national security organization is “badly broken and it needs your attention.”

Since the early days of TSA, “Red Teams” have been testing airport checkpoint screeners who have always had a reportedly high failure rate. In early 2015, a Red Team passed through airport security almost every test threat item: guns, knives, and explosive components. On May 30, Melvin Carraway, the acting TSA Director, was reassigned after an internal DHS investigation found security failures at dozens of the nation’s busiest airports.

Former TSA administrator John Pistole used the exact words heard again in 2017 when TSA failed to make the grade and justify its existence:

“It’s disturbing news. The question is how we can best mitigate that vulnerability in a way that doesn’t prohibit the free movement of people and goods. That’s just something that there’s no perfect answer for.”

This answer may not be perfect but it would literally save billions of taxpayer dollars and prevent any more “disturbing” news about national travel security:

Kick this loser organization to the curb. Enough already. Don’t throw good money after bad. Any questions?
