Are Senate Democrats Breaking Away From Pelosi?

January 7th has come and gone…

Why was that date significant? That answer lies with Speaker Pelosi, who had promised she would forward the articles of impeachment by that date.

Her deception has apparently aligned Senator Lindsey Graham and a few Senate Democrats — who announced it’s time to let go of those impeachment articles voluntarily.

If not, a resolute Graham is preparing a resolution forcing the House Speaker to relinquish them.

The Republican chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, appeared last week on Fox’s Sean Hannity and announced that Pelosi’s “dam is about to crack,” citing that members within her own party are beginning to break with the embattled House Speaker.

Graham half mockingly used Pelosi’s own words against her, “You said it was urgent,” Graham then elaborated further, “If you believe it to be urgent, send it to the Senate for disposition.”

The South Carolina legislator then announced to Sean, that he will introduce a written resolution on Thursday, informing the Speaker she lacks “the power to effectively veto a resolution passed by a duly elected majority of the House of Representatives by refusing to transmit such a resolution to the Senate.”

Adding that hanging onto the articles, “is a flagrant violation of the separation of powers expressly outlined in the bicameral impeachment process, under the Constitution of the United States.”

Graham then announced he plans to begin the trial next week adding; “Hats off to Mitch McConnell for playing this very well. We’ll take the trial up next week.”

Meanwhile, Senate Democrats, namely Senator Dianne Feinstein from Pelosi’s home state of California along with Senator Joe Manchin from West Virginia and Angus King of Maine urged Pelosi to release the articles

Feinstein even expressed her frustration with Pelosi on Politico stating; “The longer it goes on the less urgent it becomes. “So if it’s serious and urgent, send them over. If it isn’t, don’t send it over.”

Manchin agreed with Feinstein that the House “should move on” and deliver the articles to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.

The Speaker has been holding on the articles since early December after the House rushed through and voted on two articles, suggesting that the President’s violations were so egregious, that even allowing him due process had to be waved, in an effort to get them to the Senate for a trial. However, somewhere between rushing through the process and getting the articles to the Senate, Pelosi suddenly decided she wanted to also rig the outcome in the Senate, which of course isn’t her domain, thus a momentary stalemate.

Democratic Senator Jon Tester perhaps said it best according to Politico; “I don’t know what leverage we have. It looks like the cake is already baked.”

Even highly partisan Senator Richard Blumenthal from Connecticut realizes that the momentum has shifted in the President’s favor acknowledged; “We are reaching a point where the articles of impeachment should be sent.”

Meanwhile, Senator Doug Jones, from Alabama told CNN he’s  “hoping” Pelosi will soon submit the articles, although he is still concerned about an agreement to hear from witnesses during the Senate trial.

Senate Majority Leader McConnell said questions about witness testimony will be raised “at the appropriate time,” adding, “Now, even fellow Democrats are expressing public concern over the speaker’s endless appetite for these cynical games.”

He also indicated that he will follow the framework of former President Bill Clinton’s impeachment trial, in which the initial agreement was to first hear the case outlined by the House, then later vote on whether to call witnesses.
