Democrats are repeating the whack-a-mole political game that was evident in the 2016 Republican primaries – where one candidate maintained a solid 25 to 30 percent base (Trump) and all the other candidates basked only momentarily in the sunshine of polling leadership.  The game does not include those who never got their heads above ground.

Former Congressman Beto O’Rourke (remember him?), California Senator Kamala Harris and New Jersey Senator Cory Booker have all been whack-a-moled – with the former two being totally knocked out of the race.

Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren seems to be the latest victim of this political curse.  Not long ago she was in second place – looking like she was drawing progressive voters from Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders and threatening former Vice President Joe Biden for the overall lead.

She is now fighting South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg for a weak third place.  Her decline seems largely due to a veracity and credibility problem.  She is just not telling the truth – in a number of ways.

Long before Warren had presidential ambitions, she has been shown to be more than willing to exaggerate her credentials – even making up a Native American ancestry and tribal identity.  She got away with that bit of fiction throughout her professional career – getting her special benefits and considerations as she rose through the academic ranks.

As part of her campaign resume, Warren created a feminist pity story – claiming that she was booted out of a teaching job she loved because she got pregnant.  Turns out that was a lie.  She had actually had her contract renewed and SHE resigned to be a stay-at-home mommy for a while.

In an effort to pander for black votes, Warren lied about the shooting in Ferguson, Missouri – making it sound like Michael Brown was summarily murdered by a local police officer.  In fact, he was being sought by police for theft and battery caught on a store cam – and had attacked the police officers who tried to arrest him.

Then there are all those “plans” she brags about.  She has a plan for everything – mostly giving everybody everything they could want.  She offered free medical care for all, forgiveness of college loans, free college, paid maternity leave, etc., etc., etc.  She also said she had a plan to pay for all the free stuff.  She lied.

Virtually every budget official, economist and opposition candidate – with the possible exception of Sanders – said that Warren’s plans would cost more than 30 trillion dollars and basically tank the economy – cut off growth, increase taxes to astronomical levels and kill innumerable numbers of jobs.  When asked what she thought of the analysis of so many experts, Warren simply said they are wrong.

Warren’s entire panoply of plans are literally impossible to achieve.  The cost is beyond any reasonable calculation and there is no chance that even if Congress were controlled by the most radical progressives, they would never be approved by the legislative branch.

In the last debate, Buttigieg put the lie to Warren’s most basic campaign theme – that she is the champion of the working class.  She is about to mount an assault on the millionaires and billionaires who, she claims, are the enemy of all that is America.  She sanctimonious claims that she will not be tainted by money from the rich.  She will not engage in fancy fundraisers with Wall Street denizens.

It was an appealing narrative until Buttigieg – during the most recent debate – pointed out that Warren had transferred millions of dollars – approximately ten million to be precise – from her Senate campaign fund to her presidential campaign fund.  AND … that Warren had raised those millions of dollars from millionaires and billionaires at the same kind of glitzy fundraising events she now condemns.

While she purports to be the Joan of Arc for the poor and disadvantaged, she is just another multimillionaire presidential candidate trying to sell a false narrative of sympathy and empathy.  She panders to class warfare even as she has taken money and endorsements from the superrich – and even praises them if their money supports left-wing causes.

She has lost momentum in the presidential race because she has been campaigning on lies, deceptions, and disinformation.  It once appeared that she would coalesce the radical left, but it now appears that she has conceded that advantage to Sanders.

So, there ‘tis.
