An Open Letter To Bill Kristol

Dear Bill,

For more than 40 years, you and I have been friendly teammates in the conservative movement.  In terms of political philosophy, we were joined at the head and heart.  I have watched your frequent appearance on MSNBC and CNN with great disappointment.  In your recent interview by the networks Ali Velshi, I was more than just disappointed.

For the past four years, I have seen your disdain for President Trump.  During the campaign, we might have been in agreement.  He was not my first choice in the Republican primaries – perhaps closer to my last choice.  I never liked his pugnacious personality – and still do not.

After he was nominated, we seem to have parted company – each taking a different path.  You continued your ad hominem animosity toward Trump.  You aligned yourself with the radical left.

I know you claim that you can be both a principled conservative and still work against Trump – choosing to empower the Democrats and their left-wing anti-conservative agenda.  In your recent interview, you even argued for the election of any one of those Democrats vying for the presidency.  And yet you call yourself a conservative.

Since I am motivated more by my conservative beliefs than partisan politics, I saw the 2016 election has an unhappy choice – but an easy one.  Both his campaign promises – even untested at the time – and the need to empower the more conservative Republicans generally, I voted for Trump.

I am not sorry I did – and I will again if he is the Republican nominee.  In fact, I have been pleasantly surprised at the conservative things he has accomplished and fought for.  That does not mean I like it all – especially when it comes to the run-away deficit spending.

But as a policy-oriented conservative, I cannot walk away from the policies in which I believe because the greater administration is headed by a person whose personality falls short of my wishes.

It makes no sense to throw the appointments to the federal courts back to those who will appoint judges repugnant to my conservative values.  Those who will end all chance at spreading school choice – especially to those in most need in our Democrat-run inner cities.  Those who will return to the regulation nation that has stifled growth and job creation and limited out economic competitiveness in the world marketplace. Those who will again increase the tax burden on every American.  Those who will take away my private health insurance in favor of a government-run system that will lead to less care at astronomical costs.  Those who will return to an open border policy and make America a sanctuary nation for all illegal immigrants – even the criminal elements – or end illegal immigration by decriminalizing border crossing.  Those who would limit freedom of speech – even criminalize unpopular speech.  Those who would not only push religion out of government, but out of our culture.  Those who have expressed a willingness to  summarily throw hundreds of thousands of people out of work to shut down the fossil fuel industry.  Those who gave us a half century of failed foreign policy.

And the list goes on.

In campaigning against the Trump administration, you are also increasing the prospect of Democrats gaining control of both houses of Congress, more governorships and state legislatures.

And yet you still claim to be a conservative.  I cannot even imagine any standard by which you can make such a claim.  No principled conservative could endorse the most radical liberal Democratic Party since the administration of Franklin Roosevelt.  When you endorse, support and promote the modern Democratic Party, you have utterly abandoned the principles of conservatism  that I hold dear – and you once did.

You are not the only conservative apostate who seems to be more comfortable with the old guard Washington establishment more than the conservative movement.  You seem to be a movement conservative who has moved on.  I have heard you parroting the talking points of the left, but never heard any explanation as to why you think you can run with the radical liberals and present yourself as a conservative.

This letter is to wish you well – although not success – in your new political and philosophic association.

So, there ‘tis.

Spot on. Emotion may pull one away from Trump, but logic says that, as a conservative, he is the only choice. Just as in 2016, we will be voting for the least worst candidate based on their politics not their behavior.

OK, Trump was never a conservative in the usual sense but so what? He’s exactly what America needs right now, and the evil Democrats are exactly what America doesn’t need. It’s beyond my comprehension how anyone who claims to be a conservative could be so despising of Trump that they’d be prepared to put the party of evil back in the White House and in control of both houses.

It is ONLY because of the sheer hatred of Trump that people like Kristol are willing to topple this country. There is no other reason.
