Uncle Sam says et tu Nancy

The immortal Shakespearian phrase of Julius Caesar as Marcus Brutus plunged his dagger into the Roman ruler seems an apt comparison for what the Nancy Pelosi-led Democrats have done to Uncle Sam.  Okay … maybe that is a bit hyperbolic, but there is a point to be made.

Democrats have been in an obsessive impeachment fervor since November of 2016.  It has resulted in an impeachment of a President of the United States for the third time in American History.  Unlike those previous occasions, it was done without an underlying criminal offense.

It has been predicated more on disdain for the pugnacious personality of the President than on actual aggrievances and abuses of power.  It is prima facia a partisan political act.  The Democrats improperly based impeachment on what President Trump is as opposed to what he did.

For sure, the accusations have gravitas in the court-of-public-opinion.  It is not due to an objective review of the facts, but on a visceral hatred for  Trump – a hatred that has manifested itself in a lynch mob mentality in which prejudices trump truth and justice.

Like Marc Antony, I have not come here to praise Trump.  I have long been a critic of his personal style.  I bristle at his sophomoric insults, his needless spats that have little to do with anything presidential and his shameless exaggerated boasts – too often based on things that are provably untrue.  I get it.  But, being a jerk is not an impeachable offense – until now.

The impeachment of President Nixon was compelling.  The impeachment of President Clinton was dubious.  The impeachment of President Trump is bogus.  And that creates an unprecedented danger to the Republic.  Undoing elections for anything less than the most egregious offenses – offenses that cannot be disputed by the opposing party and half the nation – undermines our national stability and shatters the essential unity of we the people.

The reason that there is such clear partisan opposition to the impeachment is that the impeachment itself has been starkly partisan – based solely on the view and advantage of one political party.  It has weaponized impeachment into a political powerplay.  No impeachment should ever be based on the interests of one party or even half the people.  It nullifies our all-important electoral process.

Yes, the Constitution grants the House the power to impeach, but it also grants Congress the power to wage war.  Would we see it as a good policy if one party were to pass the Articles of War against Canada?  The point is because an institution has a power does not mean it cannot be misused or abused.  In this case, it is arguable that the House is abusing its power far more than the President.

Based on the facts of the case and the alleged abuses, there is not a modern-day President who could not be impeached – whether it was President Bush launching of the war in Iraq or President Lincoln suspending the right of habeas corpus during the Civil War- using the standards of the Democrats. President Obama could have been impeached for making recess appointments when the Senate was not in recess and for withholding congressionally subpoenaed records dealing with the Fast-and-Furious scandal.

The current impeachment is nothing more than a political popularity contest.  Most of those who clamor for Trump’s impeachment could care less about criminality and constitutional abuse.  They simply do not like the guy.

As was the intention of the Founders, the Senate will act to cool the partisan passions of the lower chamber.  It will refuse to remove President Trump from office – which means our constitutional system is working despite the efforts of House Democrats to undermine it.

So, there ‘tis.
