Virginians are rapidly mobilizing to protect their Constitutional rights from gun-grabbing Democrats who gained the State House majority in November 2019, thanks to former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg. The global financier recently announced that he intends to match his billions against those of incumbent GOP President Donald Trump by running against him in the 2020 election.

The Democratic Party won majorities in both the Virginia House of Delegates and the Senate on November 5, 2019, the first time since 1994 that both State houses and the governorship were held by the Donkeys.

On November 24, 2019, Bloomberg (77) – once a registered Republican – staged his election announcement in the Commonwealth of Virginia. The location was no accident, according to ABC News:

“Bloomberg chose to begin his campaign in Virginia because he backed 15 Democratic candidates who championed climate change and gun violence prevention, and helped Virginia Democrats win full control of the Virginia state government for the first time in 25 years.”

In response, Virginia gun owners have assembled by the hundreds at county Board of Supervisors meetings to voice their concerns over the liberal gun nuts now in charge of the state legislature.

So many gun-rights supporters showed up in two counties (Amelia and Amherst) that they couldn’t all fit inside the building. Crowds of people filled the hallways and stood, backed up, on the front lawns.

As of December 18, 83 out of 95 counties, 9 out of 38 independent cities, and 19 towns have adopted Second Amendment sanctuary resolutions in Virginia.

Second Amendment sanctuary “refers to resolutions adopted by some jurisdictions in the United States to not expend resources to enforce certain gun control measures perceived as violative of the Second Amendment. The resolutions oppose enforcement of universal gun background checks, high capacity magazine bans, assault weapon bans, red flag laws, and more.”

Philip Van Cleave, the President of the gun-rights group Virginia Citizens Defense League (VCDL), has been defending the American right to bear arms in Virginia for more than 20 years. The pro-gun Virginian explained the large turn-outs of fellow residents:

“It’s sending a message to Richmond saying we don’t want any more gun control out here.”

Virginia counties have declared themselves 2A – Second Amendment – sanctuaries in numbers never seen before in any state in the Union. Van Cleave said that the November elections had rung alarm bells:

“Nothing even touches the activity in Virginia right now. A lot of gun owners were sleeping, but now they’ve woke [sic] the sleeping giant. All these gun owners that have been sound asleep have suddenly woken up.”

In Shenandoah County, 1,000 2A supporters turned out for a Board of Supervisors meeting. Another 700 showed up in Washington County.

Of Virginia’s 2 million gun owners, 600,000 hold concealed carry permits. The 2A advocates pack a lot of political weight in a total population of 8 million people.

At a meeting of the Culpeper County Board of Supervisors, the panel voted unanimously to declare the county a Second Amendment Constitutional County. Sheriff Scott Jenkins promised to protect his state from “further unnecessary gun restrictions and “Red Flag” laws without due process” in a December 4 Facebook post:

“Every Sheriff and Commonwealth Attorney in Virginia will see the consequences if our General Assembly passes further unnecessary gun restrictions…if necessary, I plan to properly screen and deputize thousands of our law-abiding citizens to protect their constitutional right to own firearms.”

Virginia Governor Ralph Northam has stated his party will promote restrictive gun control measures per the gun-grab agenda since Bloomberg bought control of the Virginia General Assembly for the Democrats.

After the tidal wave of 2A county declarations, Northam and incoming Senate majority leader Dick Saslaw, a fellow Democrat, announced they have abandoned their planned legal ban the possession of assault weapons. They claim a clause will be added to the law that will allow Virginians to keep the firearms currently in their possession – with a catch – red tape. Speaking for Northam, Alena Yarmosky explained:

“In this case, the governor’s assault weapons ban will include a grandfather clause for individuals who already own assault weapons, with the requirement they register their weapons before the end of a designated grace period.”

Van Cleave said that VCDL will fight any new gun ban. Substituting gun confiscation with a grandfather clause and grace period for gun registration is still unacceptable, as he outlined:

“The problem with what his suggestion is it’s still taking away guns. Yeah, we get to keep our AR-15s, but what about the next generation and the generation after them? Who are we to negotiate away their rights and accept this crap?”

Van Cleave did propose a bipartisan partnership on gun legislation that targets criminals rather than law-abiding gun owners.

Almost 72 percent of Virginia’s acreage is now a self-designated 2A sanctuary, quickly being called a Second Amendment Constitutional County.

This is good to see. It’s too bad that things had to get this bad before Virginia’s gun owners came together to fight back. It would’ve been much easier to just vote. Then the Democrats would not have won the majorities they did and would not be trampling rights of the citizens they represent. My 2¢, Phil in TX
