Every decent American grieves over the seemingly senseless killing of innocent people – especially our children — carried out by deranged shooters.  It may seem repetitious, but our first response should be an expression of national sympathy and mourning for the victims and those who loved and cherished them.

It is our tradition – and a good one – that in days of shock and grief we set aside our daily activities and suspend even our debates and disagreements to focus on the tragedy that has occurred.  It is a matter of respect for those most affected.  When I lost my Marine grandson in the war in Afghanistan, our first desire was not to debate whether America should be in that war or not.

In fact, we did not wish to engage in any political discussions or social small talk.  Bringing such conversations to our family at that time was hurtful and offensive – inconsiderate of our personal loss.  I think our feelings were natural.

Perhaps it is because of my own experience that I was so deeply offended by a post-shooting television appearance by president candidate and California Senator Kamala Harris.  While she offered an obligatory sentence of sympathy, Harris quickly shifted into her gun-control stump speech.  Even as images of the shooting scene flashed on the screen, Harris carried on her anti-gun screed.

Even that was misplaced in that setting.  None of the gun control measures proposed by Harris would have had ANY impact on the shoot in Santa Clarita, California.  The perpetrator used a handgun.  He had no history of mental illness or raging threats against society.  But, to her, issues did not matter.  Harris was provided with an opportunity to get face time on the telly and she was determined to use it – or more correctly misuse it.

I realize that having already expended her 15 minutes of fame on the presidential campaign trail, Harris is desperate to get whatever attention she can in a desperate effort to give her campaign some semblance of relevancy.  Distracting from the tragedy to promote her political agenda may appeal to some of her hardcore base – but only if they check their hearts at the door.

Personally, I found her performance to be utterly heartless and shameful.  Ironically, she diminished her stature in a gambit that will not likely enhance her standing in the polls.

So, there ‘tis.
