Schiff redefines bribery

Schiff redefines bribery

If there ever was an eloquent example of how Democrats are desperately seeking a “crime” to justify their predisposed desire to impeach President Trump, House Intelligence Committee Chairman – and current point man on the project – has given us one.

It is one of those small – largely unnoticed – things that have great relevance.  It also reflects on Schiff’s dishonest creativity in pursuing his objective.

Keep in mind that he is the fellow who claimed to have seen conclusive evidence that Trump and his folks had criminally colluded with Russia – only to have Special Counsel Robert Mueller repudiate that claim in his final Report.  Schiff had lied assuming that Mueller would accuse Trump.

Schiff was also the fellow who opened his impeachment inquiry hearing with a totally invented quote allegedly from the telephone transcript between Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky – a falsity that gained undeserved immortality in the official Congressional Record.

Schiff says he does not think “any decision has been made on the ultimate question about whether Articles of Impeachment should be brought,” but he accuses Trump of “ a number of impeachable offenses” including bribery and high crimes and misdemeanors based on what he has witnessed in those secret inquiries.  If that sounds like what Schiff claimed in advance of the Mueller Report, you have been paying attention.

To make his specious argument, the malevolently creative partisan hack has redefined the word “bribery.”  Long before the current impeachment circus has folded its tent, Schiff has again made accusations of criminal behavior against Trump based  only in information to which he has been uniquely privy.

Knowing that such a bribery charge would never survive the first Motion to Dismiss in a real court-of-law and is not likely to survive even the biased impeachment process as legally defined, Schiff has come up with his own version of bribery.

During an interview with National Public Radio (NPR), Schiff said that he does not mean bribery “as we understand it in law today.”  He claims that means impeachable bribery as the Founders meant it.  One is inclined to believe that Schiff had visited Madam Olga  to confer with the Founders.

In proffering this argument, Schiff appears to be admitting that he does NOT have a bribery case against Trump that would stand up as a crime today.  It seems that if you are going to accuse a person of a crime, it should be legally defined as a crime  Yes, it does not have to be a real crime to impeach a President since it is purely a political – non-judicial – process.  And boy!  Does Schiff know how to stretch that to the limits of credibility – and maybe a bit past.

Schiff’s reputation for sleaziness is starting to impact on the entire process.  A number of Democrats have expressed concern that Schiff is screwing up the process – giving Trump an advantage.  While most American citizens currently favor impeachment according to polls – that is due to the impact of large Democrat states, like California and New York.  In most of the all-important battleground states, the majority opposes impeachment – and Schiff could be part of the reason.

When the public fully realizes that this impeachment process is based on phony crimes and hyped accusations, it is the Democrats who may come out the loser – and Schiff will be their poster boy.

So, there ‘tis.
