It was a major defeat Tuesday for “The People’s Defense Initiative,” a pro-illegal immigrant group that initiated in support of ballot resolution “Proposition 205”, which would have designated the city of  Tucson, Arizona as the states one and only “sanctuary city.”

The proposed resolution was overwhelmingly rejected by Tucson voters that would have given sweeping protections to illegal aliens, and prohibit local law enforcement from working with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

At the end of the day, over 71% of voters rejected the measure. Even more, telling the measure was opposed by every member of the Tucson City Council — all of whom are Democrats.

Council members were worried that the Presidents threat to hold millions of dollars in federal funding may have contributed to their opposition to Proposition 205.

Democrats were also aware of the President’s confrontations with other local authorities concerning the thorny issue of sanctuary policies, warning those states that he would use every means at his disposal in withholding federal funds and grants.

Council members were also concerned that the measure would prohibit the city from working with federal law enforcement on issues that have no relation to immigration enforcement.

Matthew Tragesser, a spokesperson at the Federation for American Immigration Reform, said in a Wednesday statement to the Daily Caller News Foundation.

“It’s refreshing to see Tucson voters and council members work collectively to reject policies that undermine federal law and harbor criminal illegal aliens.”

Adding, “While there are more than 560 sanctuary jurisdictions throughout the country, citizens nationwide are voicing their concerns, and stymieing dangerous sanctuary laws, at the state level. Florida recently adopted anti-sanctuary laws. At the local level, Montgomery County, Maryland, has experienced a spate of violent crimes at the hands of illegal aliens, and also just incorporated anti-sanctuary policies.”

The overwhelming defeat of Proposition 205 was even more remarkable, considering the general makeup of Tucson, in that the city’s racial makeup is largely Hispanic, with a huge Democratic influence. In short a blue city within an overwhelmingly red state.

Moreover, every member of the city council, the mayor’s office, and all three congressional districts that cover the city are controlled by the Democratic Party.

However despite the cities political affiliation, on this issue, only 28.6% of those voters who cast their ballots on Tuesday supported the sanctuary measure.

The measure would have restricted the police from inquiring about an individual’s immigration status. Proposition 205 would have also prevented police from cooperating with federal immigration authorities in regard to immigration raids and other activities by the agency.

Following Tuesday’s vote supporters of Proposition 205, namely the “People’s Defense Initiative,” put out a statement acknowledging the huge loss, “We are incredibly proud of the hard work and inspiring commitment of our team and the hundreds of Tucsonans who made this campaign their very own.”

Adding, “Through this effort, we were able to uplift an important city-wide conversation that changed Tucson for the better.”

Although Tucson residents soundly rejected the sanctuary proposal, they also voted in Regina Romero, the first Latina to be elected mayor within this southern city.

“Tucson’s rejected sanctuary proposition should serve as a model for other jurisdictions wishing to fight back against policies that minimize public safety and encourage more illegal immigration into communities,” Tragesser said.

Similarly, Montgomery County, in Maryland controlled by Democrats has been forced to reconsider their anti ICE, sanctuary policy, after a series of brutal rapes by illegal aliens, made national news, forcing Democrats to admit they bungled the process.
