Deep Throat, unnamed sources, an anonymous editorial and now a book by Anonymous … and CNN

Almost 50 years ago, the Washington Post relied on an unnamed source dubbed Deep Throat to provide damaging information against President Nixon.  His name was not revealed at the time – and he was never brought in to testify at the impeachment hearing – Deep Throat was instrumental in building public support for the impeachment of Nixon.

Decades later it was revealed that Deep Throat was FBI Associate Director William Felt — who outed himself in a deathbed confession.  Although it was of little import at the time, the revelation was significant because Felt – despite his high office — was not in a position to provide the firsthand knowledge that was widely reported.  Had he been known at the time, much of what he is claimed to have told Washington Post reporters Robert Woodward and Carl Bernstein would have been discredited or dismissed.  It was his anonymity that gave his claims undo credibility in the gossip-based and too often biased court-of-public-opinion.

Since those long-ago days, the Fourth Estate has increased its use of unnamed sources and single sources to craft narratives – often specious narratives to advance preconceived political positions.  As the left-wing media has become more biased, it has become less transparent – obviously.

In September of 2018, the New York Times denigrated journalistic traditions and ethics even further by publishing an explosive guest editorial by an anonymous writer – someone only identified as an official of the President Trump administration.  That could literally include hundreds, if not thousands, of folks working in the White House or any Cabinet or agency office under the Executive Branch.

The speculation ran so preposterously wild that reporters even speculated that it may have been penned by Vice President Pence.  That kind of reckless and irresponsible speculation is the reason that anonymous and unnamed sources are a problem.  No! More than a problem.  They are a disgrace and an injustice to fact-finding and truth.

We have the same issue with the anonymous whistleblowers.  They hide behind a legal shield of anonymity – which should be unconstitutional — to engage in political sniper fire.  If you are accused of a crime in our judicial system, the Constitution requires that your accusers be known and subject to cross-examination.  The secret accusation is an anathema of a free society.  But impeachment is not a judicial process, so such critical protections are dispensed with by strident political operatives.

Publishing books by anonymous authors is not new.  Earlier in the Twenty-First Century, there was a series of books that were supposed to be diaries of folks who transition from the good life to victims of the darkness of drugs, alcohol and/or sex.  While some authors were known, the use of anonymous was a publishing gimmick to promote largely fictional accounts.

The book that recently hit the market, “A Warning,” was written by the same Anonymous who penned the New York Times editorial.  It is supposedly another #NeverTrump Resistance Movement insider – someone high up in the ranks of the White House — close to the President.  But who knows?

Just as it was shameful for the New York Times to give this person valuable space on the editorial page, it is shameful of Grand Central Publishing for putting such a book on the market without revealing the author.  As was the Times, Grand Central is complicit in perpetrating a fraud on the public.

For the record, Grand Central Publishing was once Warner Books – a division of Warner Communications.  Warner Communications owns … drum roll, please … CNN.  That’s right.  One of the media arms of the Democratic Party and the #NeverTrump Resistance Movement published the book that CNN reports about so favorably.

The author has been justifiably criticized for his or her obvious cowardness.  If they had something worthwhile to say, it should be said in public so that they and their information can be properly assessed.  Is an obsessive desire to destroy the Trump presidency the motivation?  If that’s what keeps this person in whatever position he or she holds as a double agent?

The news media and the publishing business are supposed to be the vehicles to get facts to the public – all the facts.  They should not be in the business of protecting cowardly individuals who want to ambush and hide.  We have no way of judging the credibility of the individual.  Does he or she have access to factual information – or is this just a political hit job based on opinion and wishful thinking?

Is this just another example of the necessitousness of east coast elitist media and its efforts to demonize all things Trump, Republican and conservative.  Methinks so.

So, there ‘tis.
