What is an Ocasio-Cortez endorsement of Sanders worth?

In his first major public appearance since suffering a heart attack, Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders held a rally with an estimated 25,000 in attendance.  He held sway over the audience with all the vigor characteristic of his pre-heart attack days.

The major news interest was the official endorsement of New York Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.  It was universally reported as an important endorsement – among the most sought after and coveted endorsements according to some Fourth Estate scribblers.

Hyperbole aside, it was a significant endorsement because Ocasio-Cortez is a newsmaker.  She attracts the press, for sure.  But how important is her endorsement in terms of driving votes?  Fame alone is not enough.

Even before the pollsters tell us, I am thinking that it will not make much difference.  Ocasio-Cortez and Sanders are politically two peas in a pod.  They are both socialist.  The Sanders platform is the Ocasio-Cortez platform.  Were she to have endorsed any other candidate, THAT would have been a big deal.

They appeal to the same crowd … the same base.  Her followers are his followers – and vice versa.  So, who are the voters that will come to Sanders because of the endorsement – voters who are not with the Vermont senator already?  Will the Ocasio-Cortez endorsement peel off voters from socialist-lite Elizabeth Warren?  Hardly.

Ocasio-Cortez is not the only – or the first – member of the so-called “squad” to have endorsed Sanders.  Minnesota Congresswoman Ilhan Omar did likewise.  Why wasn’t she on the stage with Sanders and Ocasio-Cortez?  Hmmm.  Was there a little fear that the Muslim hajib might have been a problem?  Was Sanders placing political pragmaticism over political correctness?  Surrounding himself with the most radical women in Congress may diminish support for Sanders.

Being seen as too radical may already be having an impact on the campaign.  It was not long ago that Sanders and former Vice President Joe Biden were in a virtual dead heat for the top slot.  There was even a moment in time – a very short moment – that Sanders was in the lead in some polls.

It would appear, however, that Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren has been siphoning off the hardcore left from Sanders.  He has been dropping into third and fourth place in more recent polls.  In the first-in-the-nation Iowa caucuses, Sanders is in single digits – behind South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg.

The fact of political Whack-A-Mole that characterizes this large multi-candidate race, once a candidate has been whacked down, they rarely resurface – thinking of former Congressman Beto O’Rourke and California Senator Kamala Harris.

It is likely that the heart attack will cost Sanders more support than Ocasio-Cortez can deliver.  Yes, Sanders is looking very energetic at the moment and he has proclaimed that he is “back – with all the implications he hopes it conveys – but he is still a 78-year-old man with a damaged heart.  To maintain any hope of being a viable candidate, Sanders cannot afford any more trips to the hospital in the next 13 months.

The Ocasio-Cortez endorsement is more of a sentimental journey than a strategic asset.  Despite a large campaign fund, Sanders is on the verge of being the latest mole about to be whacked – and Ocasio-Cortez cannot do a thing about it.

So, there ‘tis.
