Will Elizabeth Warren’s Latest Lie Jeopardize Her Campaign?

Does Elizabeth Warren speak with a forked tongue?

Her 2020 presidential campaign got off to a rocky start when she faced persistent questions about whether she had exaggerated her Native American ancestry to get accepted into Harvard and other top schools.

After months of dissembling, and obfuscation, including ridicule from nearly every quarter, Warren finally agreed to a DNA test, which showed that her Native ancestry was marginal at best.

Now Warren faces renewed criticism for repeatedly suggesting – in a bid to win over female voters — that she was once fired from a job because she was pregnant

The problem?  A video has surfaced in which she talks about leaving that same job of her own volition.

Predictably, Warren has doubled down on her false claim.  She probably has to – anything else could well doom her recent surge to the top of the Democratic primary field.

But there’s a disturbing syndrome at work here:   Democratic candidates with an elite pedigree trying to demonstrate their “street cred” by suggesting that they are somehow members of  America’s “oppressed.”

Every politician, of course, seeks to ingratiate him or herself with prospective voters.  But Democrats representing a party that has largely lost its roots in the great lower class struggle of the 1930s and 1960s has a special need to project a measure of populist “authenticity”

America’s last Democratic president was a master of this political tradecraft

During the 2008 campaign, Barack Obama played up the Midwest roots of his White stepfather to try to appeal to mainstream voters.  He also pointed to his divorced White mother to suggest that he struggled early on in life.

It was poppycock.  In Hawaii where he grew up young Barack and his mother were surrounded with support that insulated his family from economic hardship.  In fact, Obama ended up attending the most elite prep school on the island, surrounded by wealthy Whites.

Before African-American audiences, Obama played the race card, portraying himself as a militant street-fighter and grassroots activist, a depiction that many of his Black contemporaries pooh-poohed as fiction.

Obama managed to have it both ways.  A fawning mainstream press corps bought the depiction as somehow emblematic of America’s cross-cultural diversity.

Not so with Warren, though.  In America, a woman that looks so White has no right to racial embellishment and ethnic self-empowerment the way a Black person might.

And a lie is a lie after all.

In the video, Warren matter-of-factly notes that she voluntarily departure from the job so that she could stay home and raise a baby.  There was no hint of any kind that she was pressured to do – or threatened with dismissal if she became pregnant.

The problem for Warren is that her latest fib once again calls into question her veracity and by extension, her basic character.

Is she a congenital liar – or embellisher – and if so, can she be trusted to level with voters if she’s elected to the presidency?

Hillary Clinton faced the same challenge in 2016 after one after another misstatement of facts came to light – most damagingly in the case of her string of false claims about her email server when she was Obama’s Secretary of State.

Warren may not have reached the same thresh hold of doubt – yet.  And it may not hurt her much with Democrats as she and her admirers circle the wagons and use her fabrication to point to many women who have suffered job penalties for getting pregnant

In fact, as we saw in the Jusse Smollett case, outright hoaxes can be justified by liberals if it somehow still confirms their larger narrative about the price of being “disadvantaged.”

But general election voters who live outside the liberal echo chamber and who polls show despise “political correctness” may not be so forgiving.

“I have a plan for that,” Warren likes brags on the stump these days.  She may need a really good damage control plan.

She is just another lying politician trying to con the voters. I would rather stay with what we have now than change to any of the transparently dishonest Democratic Party candidates, and that is saying something!
