Nadler takes Democrats down the rabbit hole of impeachment

New York Congressman and Chairman of the House Judiciary Committee Jerry Nadler is so eager to preside over an impeachment hearing that he is willing to take the entire Democratic Party down a political rabbit hole.  One can only assume that it is a vain effort to leave a footprint in history larger than his actual petit shoe size.

Nadler has already arrogantly declared that his trumped-up investigations (pun intended) are tantamount to an impeachment hearing.  That is patently untrue.

He recently led his Committee to pass a resolution establishing some sort of ground rules for impeachment.  In the spirit of the times, he prevailed to get every Democrat on the Committee to vote in favor of this political nonsense – with every Republican member opposing.

According to the resolution, the Judiciary Committee can call witnesses.  It also allows the Committee to hold closed door hearings and gives President Trump – or his lawyers — the ability to respond to public testimony in writing – although it does not compel them to do so.  I assume they still have a First Amendment right to respond verbally.  None of that seems much different than what they could do without the showboating resolution.

The resolution enables Committee staffers to interrogate witnesses for one full hour each, but only after the members of the committee have completed their inquiry.  This means that the Committee members can offer up grandstanding speeches and produce video footage for campaign commercials.  Nadler well knows that in the past all the grandstanding speeches limited the time for relevant questioning.

Since this is merely a Committee resolution, it does not require approval by the entire House – an approval that Nadler knows he would never get.

Nadler claims that his faux impeachment hearing will go much further than the investigation and report by Special Counsel Robert Mueller.  Really, the Napoleonesque politician thinks he can discover more with a few politically based hearings than did Mueller over an 18-month period with a team of aggressive investigators, hundreds of witnesses in multiple nations, thousands of subpoenas and an expenditure of more than $25 million.

And for what?

Currently there are not nearly enough votes in the House to even impeach Trump.  Yes, most Democrats have said they want an impeachment hearing – but the number is far, far short of the number needed to vote impeachment with the vast majority of Republicans opposing.  Nadler also faces Speaker Nancy Pelosi who believes that the process of impeachment – which more than half of Americans oppose – could lead to the loss of those freshman members who won in Trump congressional districts – and potentially, the loss of her majority and speakership.

Now let us assume that beyond all odds, the House actually votes Articles of Impeachment against Trump.  It would be dead-on-arrival in the Senate.  In other words, Nadler is going for political gamesmanship over any real attainable goal or objective.

Nadler’s scheme could also take the air out of the presidential campaigns by diverting enormous amount of media attention on the circus even as the candidates are trying to “stick to the issues” – as they oft say.  In some ways, a failed impeachment process could even help Trump by offering up yet another I-told-you-so exoneration of the President.

Nadler’s effort to get Trump is just new wine in an old bottle — just another of a myriad of investigations that have so far rendered nothing but political pulp.  We can expect more of the same.

So, there ‘tis.

P.S. I got a kick out of the photo.  Seems like the staff had to remind Nadler to turn off his cell phone before reading the resolution.
