A victory is a victory, however in a solidly conservative district like North Carolina’s 9th Congressional District, to beat out a Democrat, even one pretending to be moderate by a little more than 2% should be concerning to those in the White House.

Speculation as to why Republican candidate Dan Bishop narrowly beat Democrat Dan McCready in the special election might be the end result of the previous Republican candidate accused of ballot fraud, which may have perhaps soured Republican voters from coming out to vote.

Moreover, it’s noteworthy to put this election into proper perspective and why this election is so important and a bellwether for 2020, in that North Carolina’s 9th district has been electing Republicans since the 1960s. Also, this is a district that President Trump handily won by 12 points in 2016.

Logic would suggest, after the President’s huge rally the night before the special election in Fayetteville, N.C., in support of Bishop, that he should have won easily.

Hopefully, Bishops narrow win, was because of the alleged fraud allegations leveled at Republican Mark Harris that perhaps spilled over into the special election, and not a systemic issue of suburban voters moving away from the President.

The alleged absentee ballot tampering by the Harris Campaign, had the Republican candidate ahead of  McCready by less than 1,000 votes last fall, when the scandal broke, forcing the election to be null-and-void.

State investigators established that a Republican operative, named Leslie McCrae Dowless, directed a coordinated scheme to unlawfully collect, falsely witness, and otherwise tamper with absentee ballots, and workers who say they had assisted him in the scheme delivered damning testimony describing their activities. Dowless himself refused to testify, on the advice of his lawyer.

After four days of submitting evidence indicating fraud and an attempt to conceal the scheme from state investigators, Harris came forward and told the state election board that he believed a new election should be called. The board voted to do so soon afterward.

Bishop was one of a crowded field of hopeful Republican’s vying for the seat and won the primary in May setting the stage to go head to head with McCready who was actually ahead of Bishop by a large margin.

That’s when The Congressional Leadership Fund, a Super Pac dedicated to electing Republicans to the House, decided to spend over $400,000 in local television spots in a “get out the vote” effort for Bishop

Although the narrow margin of victory for Bishop may indeed be the residue from the Harris Campaign, Republican’s should be concerned in those suburban Republican districts across the country, where Democrats successfully made inroads and recaptured the House during the midterm election.

Bishop’s race suggests GOP candidates in these places should be primed about maintaining any existing advantages they currently have.

However regardless of how tight the margin of victory was, Republican’s still celebrated the win.

“Congratulations to Dan Bishop on his hard-fought victory in North Carolina’s special election,” CLF President Dan Conston said in a statement. “The results tonight are the clearest sign yet that the left’s embrace of socialism is putting even their strongest and best-funded candidates in dire jeopardy. Though McCready had the financial advantage at every turn, CLF mobilized quickly and made the investments needed to expose his self-dealing ways and turn out key Republican voters. We look forward to welcoming Dan Bishop to Congress in short order.”

Dan Bishop was down 17 points 3 weeks ago. He then asked me for help, we changed his strategy together, and he ran a great race. Big Rally last night. Now it looks like he is going to win. @CNN & @MSNBC are moving their big studio equipment and talent out. Stay tuned!

The tally after it was all over had Bishop beating McCready 50.8% to 48.6%, with Bishop’s total margin of victory a little over 4,000 votes.

McCready had all the name recognition and was running for months with billionaires $$$! Bishop, a virtual dark horse, down 17 points (probably by pollsters who predicted Clinton’s victory) still pulled it off.
Sorry, I’m stoked about the win!!
