A report by German tabloid “Bild” confirms that the German government under the direction of German Chancellor Angela Merkel has refused a request by the United States, to assist in a naval surveillance mission in the Persian Gulf.

The outright refusal to assist a member NATO nation that has been attacked is a serious violation under the NATO doctrine of collective defense guaranteed by the NATO alliance, Germany is therefore duty-bound to come to the aid of its allies if asked.

The German Federal Foreign Office said that Washington had approached them requesting navel assistance within the Persian Gulf as tensions with Iran escalate, however Germany rejected the appeal saying there was no prospect of a contribution.

Both the United States and Great Britain have been attacked in recent months within the Strait of Hormuz by a brazen Iranian military, yet Merkel’s left-centrist coalition government has made it clear she will not assist her NATO allies.

According to the German newspaper “Tagesspiegel,” Social Democrat (SPD) foreign policy spokesman Nils Schmid said that “participation is out of the question,” adding: “Germany will not participate in a U.S. mission.

Adding, “We could suddenly find ourselves on the side of the Americans in a war with Iran. European nations should be very careful to keep a distance from the military mission of the Americans.”

Another foreign office source told the tabloid: “Participation in the American strategy of maximum pressure is out of the question for us.”

He then added that Germany’s goal is to “de-escalate tensions” within the Persian Gulf by diplomatic means, citing Germany’s desire along with the European Union to keep the dismantled Iranian nuclear deal somehow viable.

A spokesman for the U.S. embassy to Germany confirmed: “We have formally asked Germany to work with France and Britain to help secure the Strait of Hormuz and fight Iranian aggression.”

U.S. Ambassador Richard Grenell has criticized Germany’s lack of participation stating, “It is woeful; Germany is the largest economy in Europe. They made a commitment to NATO, and they should be serious about that commitment; it is a multilateral institution that guarantees the allies, guaranteeing freedom.”

The Ambassador also noted Germany’s lack of military readiness, stating: “German military officials know that the readiness issue is a serious problem, there are no working submarines, for example; they don’t have a military that is currently ready.”

On July 11th Iranian gun boats attempted to seize a British oil tanker as it entered the narrow Strait of Hormuz, however a British frigate positioned itself between three Iranian gun boats and the British Heritage tanker forcing the Iranian gun boats to withdraw.

However just a week later the Iranian military succeeded in capturing the British-flagged oil tanker, Stena Impero, later on the same day US officials confirmed that another oil tanker was seized

In a statement concerning the unlawful seizure of the oil tankers UK Foreign Secretary Jeremy Hunt said that he was “extremely concerned by the seizure.”

Adding, “These seizures are unacceptable. It is essential that freedom of navigation is maintained and that all ships can move safely and freely in the region,” he said. He added that the British Ambassador in Tehran is in contact with the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs to “resolve the situation.”

These are hostile acts of war by a desperate rogue regime attempting to extort some type of pressure on the Trump Administration to perhaps end some of the harsh sanctions imposed on them.

Germany has become a willing accomplice in this high stakes drama and should be treated as an ally of this rogue regime, and must be held accountable for betraying it’s commitment to the NATO alliance.

They should be thrown out of NATO along with Turkey. We should close our bases in Germany and bring our troops home. Let Russia invade the cheap bastards.

Then let German-flagged tankers be captured. See what happens then. Merkel is just useless. I remember when Germany had some actual backbone.

Yeah, but the last time Germany showed the world it had some actual backbone, they lost the war.

I think the US could get along without Iranian oil. Maybe we should sell oil to the Brits and let the rest of Europe worry about their own oil supply.
