The Goebbels Propagandist of the Year (or More Often) Award goes to…

The conversion of certain elements of the so-called “news” media into a political adjunct to the progressive Democratic Party has gone far past opinion and analysis and into the dark and dangerous arena of political propaganda.

This evident fact has fostered the need for recognition of these reprobates who fraudulently call themselves journalists.  Therefore, I am presenting my own “Goebbels Propagandist of the Year (or More Often) Award.” The name of the award is a bit cumbersome since it is likely and necessarily to be presented more frequently than once every year.

(My recognition should not to be confused with the online Golden Goebbels – a commercial enterprise that allows anyone to nominate a candidate if they first purchase the a statuette — and charges $2.99 to vote on nominees.)

For those who skipped out on their world history class, Joseph Goebbels was the infamous propaganda chief for Adolph Hitler.  He popularized the value concept of grand lies to give life to false narratives.

Before announcing the winner, it is necessary to explain the standards that determine propaganda.  These are not things this writer invented.  They are the official definitions.  According to the Google online dictionary, propaganda is:

(n) Information, especially of a biased or misleading nature, used to promote or publicize a particular political cause or point of view.

Webster offers up these definitions.

The spreading of ideas, information, or rumor for the purpose of helping or injuring an institution, a cause, or a person.

Ideas, facts, or allegations spread deliberately to further one’s cause or to damage an opposing cause

(If you capitalize Propaganda, it refers to the congregation of Catholic cardinals who oversee missionary work.  That has nothing to do with this commentary, but I thought you might find that interesting.)

Selecting a winner from among a large number of neo-propagandists ensconced in the Fourth Estate was not easy.  The competition was quite stiff.  In fact, virtually all the runners-up read like MSNBC’s 24-hour schedule.

With all that behind, it is time to bestow the … uh … Award.  This year’s (or more often) dubious honor award goes to – drum roll, please – the philosophically yoked couple hosting CNN’s “Morning Joe” – the namesake Joe Scarborough and his partner in propaganda — and in life — Mika Brzezinski.

Brzezinski is a member-in-good-standing of the progressive Washington establish – born to the cloth.  She is the daughter of the late Zbigniew Brzezinski, one-time foreign affairs advisor for President Jimmy Carter, whose most enduring foreign policy achievement was replacing the Shah of Iran with terrorist Muslim extremists – resulting in the current situation in the Middle East.

Joe Scarborough took a more circuitous route to propagandist for the left.  He was a self-proclaimed conservative Republican congressman from Florida – that was before his paramour, now wife, Mika took him to left-wing obedience school.  Joe left the Republican Party to become an independent – at least as he labels himself. He still preposterously claims to be a conservative even though he plays the dummy to Brzezinski’s left-wing ventriloquism.  In terms of his on-air statements, Scarborough could not be more of a spokesperson for the most dishonest and unhinged elements in #NeverTrump Resistance Movement.

It is not just all about Trump.  The Joe and Mika team – including their carefully recruited panels of parroting pundits – aim the vitriol at the entire Republican Party from officials to what they derisively refer to as Trump’s base.  And no conservative program, policy or proposal is spared across the board criticism – including from the supposed conservative host.

In the true spirit of propaganda, this devious duo cast all those they see as opponents of their narrow ideology and partisan viewpoint as vile people who are enemies of the state.  They apply virtually every negative appellation at them (me too) including racists, sexists, xenophobes, misogynists, white supremacists, and even Nazis – which is ironic in view of the fact that the left in general – Scarborough and Brzezinski specifically – are engaging in the same sort of political propaganda in which Goebbels engaged on behalf of Hitler.  That is why the Award bears his infamous name.

If you are a member of the Trump-hating radical left, you can un-bunch your undies.  I am NOT placing the atrocities of Hitler and his Nazi regime on the shoulders of Scarborough or Brzezinski, but only noting that they ARE engaging in the same type of tactics used by Goebbels – one of the world’s most infamous propagandists.

It is traditional when bestowing an award – even one of negative distinction – to itemize a few salient  points addressing the rationale and appropriateness of the presentation.  I am pleased to oblige.

The first indication of propaganda is to block out legitimate alternative views.  Although they are by far not alone in censoring media and spinning content, they are among the most egregious.  They use dozens of sycophants as panelists, contributors and guest reporters who will fawningly praise Joe and Mika and reinforce their every slanted statement – even using a number of paid false-flag so-called Republicans who also take up the anti-Trump, anti-Republican and anti-conservative rants and screeds.  Their panels are self-contained echo chambers.

Propagandists’ goal is to manage what people think.  It is not to open educational or informational dialogue.  It is a combination of an arrogance of self-proclaimed intellectual and moral supremacy and a brutal desire to attain authoritarian power.  In a candid moment, Brzezinski admitted their belief in controlling opinion when she blurted out on air that “it is our job to tell people what to think.”  She more recently reinforced her propaganda instinct by saying that it is up to the media – assumedly people like her and Scarborough – to “amplify” what the people need to know.  There can be no better confession of the purpose and use of propaganda.

Propaganda often utilizes what psychologists call “projection” – to apply of one’s own attributes as criticism of adversaries.  As one example, Scarborough accuses Trump of “narrow casting” his message to a select audience when, in fact, “Morning Joe” is structured to be a narrowcast to the far-left Trump haters.  There is no objectivity.  The fans and regular viewers of “Morning Joe” are overwhelmingly composed of a base of hardcore members of – or believers in – the #NeverTrump Resistance Movement.

One of the more sinister elements of propaganda is the demonization of those whose ONLY evil is to disagree with the established partisan and often mendacious narratives – especially those who have persuasive and legitimate counterpoints.  Even as Scarborough criticizes Trump’s pugnacious rhetoric – and not without some justification – he fully engages in the same gutter tactics.  Scarborough hypocritically refers to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell as “Moscow Mitch.”

Scarborough preposterously claims political correctness is bad and that it is Trump who uses identity politics to divide the nation.  Really?  Political correctness and identity politics comprise the backbone of the progressive philosophy.  Republicans and conservative hate it.  I recently wrote a commentary on the evils of identity politics from the traditional conservative position.  Sorry, Joe.   You guys (and gals) on the left own political correctness and identity politics lock, stock and barrel.

Propaganda is designed to raise the emotional levels of partisan animosity. In an exceptional telling virtuoso performance, Scarborough went on a very telling rant.  He called on Democrats to “destroy” Trump and the Republicans.  He said, “I would not rest until I turn your bones into dust, and then I would spit on those bones.”  This is the sort language that we have come to expect in propaganda screeds spewed by terrorists like Abū Bakr al-Baghdadi when talking about American leaders – but not from even a domestic partisan political activist.  But that is because Scarborough is not an activist, but a propagandist.

Another hallmark of propaganda is mocking opponents.  You can research how Hitler used offensive and exaggerated posters and cartoons – the memes of those times – to make Jews, Negroes and others appear as inferior and ignorant humans.  One of the regular features of “Morning Joe” is to use verbal and visual mocking of Trump  to the uproarious laughter of their fawning guests.

When Trump was punked at a Turning Point speech with a phony presidential seal that used the Russian double-headed eagle and golf clubs in place of the 13 arrows, “Morning Joe” not only drew attention to the phony seal incident – fair enough – but they made it a running joke throughout the program.   In repeated reference to Trump on other issues, they continued to use the image of the President in front of the phony seal.

Incredibly – but not surprisingly – Brzezinski tried to make it an important matter of governance.  According to her, this was an example of presidential incompetence even though no one had seen the projected image until it went up and no one on Trump’s side had anything to do with it.  No insult is too small when it comes to Trump.

Propaganda depends on partisan narrative, spin and disinformation  — outright lies.  In endorsing such Democrat proposals as the minimum wage, Mika and Joe have zero interest in offering up the facts – and how the minimum wage increase would do damage to the poor.  Rather, they stick with the baseless narrative of the Democrats for purely political reasons.

No matter how many times McConnell said the Senate would pass aid to first responders at the twin Trade Towers on 9/11 – and they did — “Morning Joe” continued to peddle the false narrative that the Senate was blocking such legislation.

Both Scarborough and Brzezinski continuously claimed – untruly – that Trump had committed criminal conspiracy with Russia even after the Mueller Report said they found insufficient evidence to establish that any American criminally colluded with Russia.  They falsely claim that Mueller had established the case that Trump was criminally guilty of obstruction of justice when that was not the outcome of the Report or any of Mueller’s subsequent statements.  In fact, the folks at the Justice Department determined that Trump was not guilty of obstruction. Like it or not, that is the final call.  To claim otherwise is untrue – ergo propaganda.

These examples are merely illustrative.  I could make a more complete record of why Joe and Mika have earned The Goebbels Propagandist of the Year (or More Often) Award, but that would require an entire book on the subject.  A hearty congratulations to Joe and Mika.  They earned it.

So, there ‘tis.

You hit the nail on the head regarding those two. I hesitate to scroll past them in my effort to reach c-Span and OAN on my TV, because of the wretching urge induced by seeing their smirky faces. I respected Joe at one time long ago. No more!

Have never watched that show. Just another reason I tend to avoid the mainstream media. They provide fake news and don’t have the best interests of our country and its people at heart.

While I’ve never seen this show as I don’t watch morning TV, I find it interesting that Trump’s methodology / speech embodies almost every characteristic you listed for propaganda. He demonizes those who disagree with him, he raises the emotional level of partisan animosity, he mocks and belittles opponents, resorts to childish name calling, and he does all he can to block out legitimate alternative views. He is a firm believer in the approach of saying anything loud enough and often enough and sooner or later the uninformed will come to believe it’s true. Sadly, our society has way too many members who fall for this approach, lacking significant skills in critical thinking. Trump definitely is a master at propaganda!

When you mention Propaganda with a capital P and Catholic cardinals, do you mean the Society for the Propagation of the Faith ??

Zbigniew Brzezinski was also the one who refused the Ambassador in Tehran to close down the embassy in 1978 which was then overrun, during the revolution there, and the officials kept hostage for over a year.
