Perils of impeachment has Democrats splintering

Perils of impeachment has Democrats splintering

If you are having trouble making sense of the Democrats goals now that they have control of the House of Representatives, it is not YOU that is confused.  It is the Democrats.

When you saw the election of a number of the most radical left-wing congressional candidates on 2018, it was easy to predict headaches for Speaker Nancy Pelosi.  The election of such political bomb-throwers as Rashida Tlaib, Omar Ilhan and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez – to name only the most visible of the far-left Resistance Movement socialists who found footing in Congress – created an overly influential caucus within the Democrat ranks.

In addition to their own power, they exerted influence on their fellow Democrats – tilting the entire party to the left.  It was the fulfillment of the hope and strategy of socialist Senator Bernie Sanders – and something he hopes to take advantage of in his presidential campaign.  How the extreme left gained popularity would take an atlas-size book to explain – but suffice it to say that it has been evolving since the anti-American, anti-capitalism, anti-free markets movements of the 1960s.

The reason the radical left movement within the Democratic Party has as much influence as it does today is due to a political miscalculation by Pelosi.  She thought – wrongfully as it turns out – that by embracing the more radical newbies, she would tamp down their off-with-their-heads rhetoric.

Pelosi gave them important committee assignments.  Rather than relegating them to the more obscure subcommittees – which would have been a more traditional placement — she put dyed-in-the-wool anti-Israel activist Omar Ilhan on the Foreign Affairs Committee and socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on the Committee on Investor Protections, Entrepreneurship and Capital Markets.

The radical left in the Democrat caucus has brought out something in Pelosi that has never been seen before – fear.  Yep!  The Speaker is afraid to slap down the most disloyal and potentially dangerous legislators.  Rather, she is trying to placate those who will not be placated.   Pelosi is trying to keep them on a team that they have refused to join.

In not controlling the handful of dissident members, Pelosi is losing control – and maybe has already lost control – of the impeachment issue.  Pelosi well understands that no matter what the House does on impeachment, the Senate will not remove Trump from office.  It is not just a matter of political loyalty, but a fundamental reluctance to undo what voters have done.  The political removal of elected officials at any level has not been popular with the public or the politicians.

But in terms of impeachment – that train is out of the yard.  At first, Pelosi made a good case for NOT moving forward for impeachment.  Instead of holding to that viewpoint, however, she buckled under the pressure from the radicals.  She equivocated by switching from a “no impeachment” stance to a “not yet” position.  With that more of her members started figuratively chanting:  What do we want? Impeachment!  When do we want it? Now!

House Democrats have worked up a scheme to move toward impeachment without appearing to move toward impeaching.  Rather than an “impeachment hearing,” they are calling for an “impeachment inquiry” to determine if there should be the official hearing.  If that strikes you as a distinction without much of a difference, you get it.  Opening an impeachment inquiry would most certainly lead to a hearing and an eventual vote on impeachment.

If it was Pelosi’s intention to avoid the impeachment process, she could not have done more to promote it when she flat out accused Trump of obstruction of justice and a cover up – and then underscored those remarks by saying that they are “impeachable offenses.”  Accusing Trump of impeachable offenses is hardly the way to avoid an impeachment.

There are two major obstacles to impeachment.  First, it will not get Trump removed from office.  Second, it would mean that the impeachment process would suck all the air out of the room up to and beyond the 2020 election.  With two years in control of the House, Democrats will have accomplished nothing other than endless investigations of which the public has tired and a suffocating impeachment process without an achievable goal.

Since impeachment is a political process, it is easy for politicians to launch a hearing.  They do not need real crimes, only a desire to boot the President out of office.  But … because it is a political process, there must be overwhelming support among we the people – and that is Pelosi’s conundrum.  Most Americans do not want to endure an impeachment process.  Hell, we are getting tired of all the politically motivated investigations.

Pelosi’s desire to avoid impeachment – if that is the case – is suffering a setback from the normally sycophantic news media.  For the most part, the anti-Trump press is singing off the radicals’ song sheet.  They would love to see impeachment hearings because (1) they hate Trump and (2) they relish the idea of reporting the ensuing political chaos.  As they say in media circles, “If it bleeds, it leads” – even if only figuratively.

One might assume that the Democrats are not sufficiently stupid to actually launch an impeachment effort, but then again, they did hand the presidency to Trump by nominating Hillary in 2016.  As Trump often says, “We’ll just have to wait and see what happens.”

So, there, ‘tis.
