Who the hell is Willie Geist?

Who the hell is Willie Geist?

If you like to watch MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” – or if you are forced to as a professional requirement, like me – you will see the undesignated co-host, Willie Geist.  In the pecking order of prominence, Joe Scarborough gets top billing with the show being named after him — not the morning cup of coffee as the double entendre suggests.

While her name is not on the marquee, equal stature goes to Mika Brzezinski, daughter of President Carter’s foreign policy advisor, Zbigniew Brzezinski (the guy who was on duty when Carter let Iran slip into the hands of the Islamic extremists)  and as of recent, the wife of Joe.  In the “Morning Joe” format, she is a co-equal partner in both roles – and the woman who apparently sent Joe, the once self-proclaimed conservative congressman from Florida, to left-wing obedience school.

The other main character is Willie Geist. By design – and for reason known only to the management of MSNBC – Geist is relegated to a second-tier role.  His is a role that was first developed and perfected by Ed McMahon on the old, old Johnny Carson late-night show.  The sidekick.  In many of his biographies, Geist is referred to as a “television personality” – a title usually given when there is a lack of any notable professional achievement.

McMahon served two functions; to agree with everything Carson said and laugh uproariously at every joke no matter the humor value.  Geist plays a similar role – and like McMahon, he does not demonstrate any intellectual power on his own.  That is not to say that he does not have any.  Who knows?  It is just that his scripted shill-like character on the “Morning Joe” stage demonstrates none.

Geist’s role as a “yes man” may have something to do with his background.  He is not a public policy expert.  He has not even been much of a political pundit.  He does not come from a political background even though that is the obsessive subject matter of “Morning Joe.”

Geist has mostly been an entertainer and humorist – having written a few lighthearted bathroom books. (I do not mean that as an insult since I have also written a bathroom book.)  In Kung Fu Panda 3, Geist did the voice of Sum.

Geist has been a fill-on anchor on many of the news shows on NBC and MSNBC, which again does not require intellectual heavy lifting.  While it is true that some news anchors are experts in their own right, many are just skilled actors – script readers – chosen as much for their appearance and vocal qualities than intellectual power.

Geist’s greatest contribution to “Morning Joe” is that he is a handsome and quite likable person.  His pleasant manner contrasts nicely with the arrogance and pomposity of Joe Scarborough and the exhausting crepe-hanging laments of Mika Brzezinski.

Unfortunately for Geist, in playing second fiddle to Joe and Mika, he spews the same dubious political narratives.  His job requires that he peddle the hardcore anti-Trump, anti-Republican and anti-conservative line.  He is not in that job to express his views, but to parrot Joe and Mika.

One can only wonder what Geist would be like if he could only express himself instead of being handed the MSNBC “Morning Joe” script every weekday.  He is not even allowed to demonstrate his established reputation for humor.  What occasionally passes for humor on “Morning Joe” is crude political mockery.

So, to answer the headline question, “Who the hell is Willie Geist?” I guess we do not know.  We can only hope that he is not really that plastic mannequin with those pull-string responses – that he is more than … well … a mere television personality.

So, there ‘tis.

Fittingly, the mean of “geist” — a German-language word — is ghost.

    Who believes in Geists?

Does my memory serve me wrong, or was this same “ghost” used by Tucker Carlson in an earlier program life of the latter, somewhat before his move to Fox?

Hmmmm, I’m guessing he peddles the hardcore anti-Trump, anti-Republican and anti-conservative line because those ARE his views….he’s not just parrotting Joe and Mika. He is way smarter than you give him credit for being.

I’g guessing Geist peddles the hardcore anti-Trump, anti-Republican and anti-conservative line because it is what he believes. He is not only expressing his views, while parrotting Joe and Mika, he is showing how smart he is. That escapes you.

What Zbigniew Brzezinski did to our foreign policy in Iran the U.S. has never recovered from his inept and clumsy political miscalculations… His daughter Mika, while playing second fiddle to “moron Joe,” is just as clumsy… when she does remove the foot from her mouth we see she has been well programmed for the Socialists mindset in our country….her father would be very proud of the traitor he created. She screwed her husband and children just like Moron Joe fuc*ed his wife and children with their sleazy on air sexual relationship…like Nancy Pelosi also a Catholic they betray their faith and she deserves this made for T.V. sex-ploit!

I must disagree with this assessment. Geist is a good interviewer and a calming influence, especially when Joe and Mika are elsewhere. Given the choice of the three, I’d like to see much more of Willie.

I’ve not seen him on “Morning Joe” or his Sunday am interview program on NBC, but I have seen him on the Today Show. I think he is a decent guy. I understand that he could be different than what I’ve seen. But I’m still giving him the benefit of the doubt.

If that’s the role he has chosen to play, then that’s who he is – an empty suit who will say whatever he’s told to say, for money. That’s who the real Willie Geist is.

In religious terms Mr. Horist worships the Antichrist. So it follows he would be critical of anyone who is kind, considerate or otherwise well-mannered.
