Defiant Barr Will Not Testify Before Democrat Led House Committee

After a grueling day of contentious testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee, a defiant William Barr said he would not appear as scheduled today before the Democratic led House Judiciary Committee.

Barr refused to show up for a second day after spending more than five hours on Wednesday defending his summary of the Mueller Report’s findings as Democrats pressed him on a letter he received from Mueller complaining that he didn’t “fully capture” the substance of his report.

In his opening statement this morning, to what would have started those proceedings, House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler, D-N.Y, said that the attorney general’s decision not to appear before the committee was emblematic of a bigger issue with the administration, where officials have declined to appear before congressional committees and President Trump has “prevented us from obtaining information about voting rights, the ACA (Affordable Care Act), and family separations.”

“Ladies and gentlemen, the challenge we face is that the president of the United States wants desperately to prevent Congress to provide any check whatsoever,” Nadler said, adding that Mr. Trump was “trying to render Congress inert.”

Nadler said that if Barr does not eventually appear before the committee, the committee will hold the attorney general in contempt.

“We can stand up to this president in defense of the country, the constitution, and the liberty we love, or we can let the moment pass us by,” Nadler said.

The Justice Department took issue with Nadler’s plan to allow staff lawyers to probe Barr during his House appearance, calling the move “inappropriate” in a statement.

Republicans Say That Democrats Deliberately Derailed Barr Hearing

Although Barr has not yet been subpoenaed to testify, Nadler said contempt citations could be possible down the road not only if the full Mueller report is not released, but also if Barr does not comply with a possible future subpoena. The move would not be unprecedented. Republicans in the House held President Obama’s Attorney General Eric Holder in contempt in 2012, after he refused to provide information on the failed gun-running sting known as “Fast and Furious.”

However, Republicans insisted Democrats had deliberately acted to derail the hearing.

“It’s a shame Members of the House Judiciary Committee won’t get the opportunity to hear from Attorney General Barr this Thursday, because Chairman Nadler chose to torpedo our hearing,” House Judiciary Committee ranking member Doug Collins, R-Ga., said in a statement. “The attorney general gave clear, informative testimony in the Senate Wednesday, as he offered to do more than a month ago in the House [the following day ]. By rejecting the chance to question Attorney General Barr or read the materials he’s provided, Democrats are trying to prolong an investigation the special counsel completed,” Collins continued.

“Ultimately, though, they’re ignoring the will of the majority of Americans who want Congress to move on and secure our border and continue to strengthen our economy.”

“We’re not torpedoing this hearing,” Nadler countered, responding to Collins’ remarks. He added that Barr has a “nerve” to challenge the panel’s ability to conduct its own hearing.

Speaking to Fox News’ “Hannity” Wednesday night, Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Lindsey Graham focused on the larger context.

“Well, to all my friends on the other side: We gave Mueller two years to do his job,” Graham said. “He had 19 lawyers. He had $25 million, he interviewed 500 people, he issued 2,000 subpoenas. He had plenty of opportunity without interference. The president gave him a million and a half documents. Everybody around the president and on the president’s campaign testified voluntarily, and here’s what we know – there was no conspiracy between the Trump campaign and the Russians at all. Mueller could not decide — chose not to press forward on obstruction. I always thought the obstruction argument was absurd. It is over, and the reason that they are mad at Barr and I is because they didn’t get the outcome they want. My friends on the other side want an outcome, and they don’t care how they get it.”

18 of 24 Democrats on the committee are lawyers. Doesn’t Nadler think that they are capable of asking questions?

If Trump wants to be re elected he should let everyone testify and remove the secrecy . If he don’t discourage Russia from meddling it only says (quietly) that he knows Putin understands .

Any person who thinks 2016 was the first time the Russians tried to meddle in a US election has had their head in the sand. They have been doing it for decades.

Furthermore, you have to be willfully blind to deny that the US has meddled in many foreign elections. President Obama himself meddles publicly in both the Brexit election and the Israeli election.

If Mueller and his team of partisan Democrat lawyers in more than two years couldn’t find anything to show Trump/Russian “collusion”, then this is all a big nothing-burger.

I’m betting Mueller doesn’t WANT to testify. He doesn’t want to be asked “When did you know there was no collusion by the Trump campaign?” or “Why didn’t you investigate the Clinton/Steele/Russia collusion?” and several other potentially embarrassing questions.
