Even as a prospective candidate, former Vice President Joe Biden was the frontrunner in virtually every poll – generally five to seven percentage points ahead of second-place Bernie Sanders – the man who only embraced the Democratic Party when he wants to be President of the United States.

Biden’s plurality of around 29 percent is significant, but not compelling. More important than his current standing in the polls is what will happen when he officially enters the race – as news reports claim he will do on Wednesday. What will happen when Biden becomes the candidate rather than being old uncle Joe, who everyone can love because he is a harmless eccentric?

That all changes when he is Joe Biden, presidential candidate. Despite a bit of a problematic past in terms of those policies from which he now claims to have evolved into a more enlightened place. There is still resentment in the black community over his handling of Anita Hill during the Justice Clarence Thomas confirmation hearings when he was chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee and his significant role in the passage of the crime bill that has resulted in massive incarceration of minorities.

He may have some problems with the hardline feminists for his touchy-feely approach to hands-on politics. But his greatest problem with the crazies in the Democrat base – and one shared by Sanders and others – is that he is an old white guy. Some in the Democrat base have applied this genital litmus test even to such darlings of the left as Beto O’Rourke and Pete Buttigieg – but at least they are not old.

On the other hand, Biden was the dutiful sidekick to America’s first President with significant black African ancestry. Whether Biden has “evolved”, enough to the satisfaction of the radical left is yet to be seen.

Despite the aforementioned political headwinds, Biden could not only break out of the pack, he could break it up. If he can pull his numbers into the mid-30s, he would effectively collapse the campaigns of most of those Democrat presidential candidates attempting to get out of the asterisk category – you know, less than one percent.

There is no doubt that the number of democrats seeking the nomination will gradually decline over the next year. There are just not enough percentage points and money to sustain such a large field.

IF … and that is a big IF … Biden can break out and shrink the size of the field, he may … just may … be able to divert the Democrats from the chaos and disaster that may lie ahead.

Biden has one advantage that may not yet be fully appreciated. Democrats and the media have spent the past three years condemning President Trump for not being sufficiently presidential and woefully inexperienced. Of the entire Democrat field, Biden comes across as the most presidential.

For eight years, he was seen in the White House, in the Oval Office and traveling with a caravan of secret service protectors. It is an imagery that no other Democrat candidate can match. Image those future political ads with Biden standing alongside heads-of-state or sitting in the Situation Room watching the taking down of Osama Bin Laden – as opposed to Buttigieg cutting a ribbon on a tertiary water treatment plant in South Bend, Indiana.

Arguably, there are only two candidates who pose a threat to Bide. One is Sanders – if he can consolidate the radical left sufficiently to get past Biden’s current lead in the polls. He needs to take away from Buttigieg, Booker, and Warren. The other threat to Biden is Biden. He has demonstrated a tone-deaf ability to say crazy stuff. There is a disturbing buffoonery in that old “Uncle Joe” image.

Judging by the situation today, Biden is the odds-on favorite to win the Democrat nomination – but then the odds today mean nothing. The events of every day – and there are many days between now and then – and the results of every upcoming primary will change the calculus in ways we could not imagine. But for now, Biden is the man to beat.

So, there ‘tis.

There is nothing they can do to win the election. The awful way the treated President Trump and his staff will preclude the democraps from winning. I will never ,ever vote for a democrap and anything I can do to get others to follow my views to vote against any and all democraps will be welcome.

There is nothing he can do to win the upcoming election. The democraps have destroyed their party. I under no circumstances ever vote for a democrap.Joe should save his breath. Just wait until the republicans dig in on his sons dealings with the enemy. This will destroy his and his sons reputations. If joe were smart ,which would bow out and save his families reputation. There is a reason that Obama is not backing him. What a failure.
