Ocasio Cortez right on FDR, wrong on Reagan

In calling out President Reagan as a racist, Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio Cortez is falling back on a Democrat canard that ALL Republicans are racists – especially older white males.  It is an old trope – the race card — that Democrats have been using since the 1960s.  Reagan actually has a great record of supporting civil rights as President of the Screen Actors Guild, as Governor of California and as President.  It is notable that Reagan and Republicans in Congress did what President Carter and the Democrats in Congress only talked about – made Martin Luther King’s birthday a national holiday.

But … the most significant and newsworthy part of Ocasio Cortez’ statement is calling out President Franklin Roosevelt as a racist.  That has been one of the Democrats’ dirty little secrets for more than 80 years.

FDR is among the most honored and highly respected presidents for the Democratic Party since his election in 1932.  He is praised for two achievements – ending the Great Depression and making the world safe for democracy by winning World War II.  Although more contemporary and objective historians argue that his economic policies failed to end a depression that carried on for more than eight years after his election – and more than ten years since the crash of 1929 – he gets credit for bringing America to victory over the Axis Power headed up by Germany and Japan.  Ironically, it was the sale of war equipment to France and England — even before the United States entered the conflict — that produced the economic recovery.

Ocasio Cortez is spot on about FDR’s racism.  In fact, he was a born and bred white supremacist.  His expressed bigotry was not only against Negroes, but Native Americans, and Asians.  His administration, and its policies were clearly the result of political progressivism that deemed non-European Caucasians as inferior races.  He was also anti-Semitic.

Roosevelt embraced many of the tenets of progressivism, such as Eugenics and Phrenology – pseudosciences that that proffered the inferiority of minority races.

While Roosevelt sent Japanese Americans to internment camps – even as other Japanese Americans were dying on the battlefield in defense of America – he assured German and Italian Americans that he would not consider such actions against them even though the United States was at war with both nations and, in many ways, German groups in America were much more active in supporting Der Fuhrer than were the Japanese.

Roosevelt went so far as to believe that Asians  and Caucasians were not biologically compatible for childbirth – saying that the outcomes of such mating would be “unfortunate.”

Roosevelt is held in high esteem even among black Americans to this day for getting them out of the Depression even though the unemployment figures among blacks have remained at depression-levels into modern times.  In a sense, millions of blacks are not out of the Depression yet.

What is little understood is the fact that Roosevelt’s New Deal policies were designed – with malice of forethought – to actually take jobs away from blacks so that they could be assumed by white Americans.

Prior to the Crash of ’29, the unemployment rates for blacks and whites were about the same – around four percent.  However, blacks held the lowest level jobs that white workers shunned in good times but were desperately sought when the economy crashed.  By the mid-1930s – thanks to the New Deal programs – black unemployment soared to more than 50 percent while white unemployment hovered around 18 to 20 percent.

This should have come as no surprise since the folks FDR appointed to develop and administer the programs were southern racists – including former Ku Klux Klan member and future Supreme Court Justice Hugo Black.

As a military aide, Roosevelt was a key player in President Woodrow Wilson’s segregations of the military and the Executive Branch of the federal government.  As a candidate for governor of New York, he advised his staff to not allow any photographs with Negroes.  He and his southern colleagues blocked repeated Republican attempts to pass anti-lynching legislation.

Very few people know that the spa where he died at the “Little White House” in Warm Springs was for whites only.  Many accept the fact that it was located in segregationist Georgia, but do not know that FDR owned it for many years and ran annual fundraising birthday parties there.

On MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” the liberal Democrats favorite historian John Meacham responded to Ocasio-Cortez accusation against Roosevelt by saying that we should not let a few imperfections overshadow the greater good of FDR.  A FEW IMPERFECTIONS???

I guess if Democrats can continue to honor and defend President Jackson – think of all those Jackson Day dinners – and Wilson, we should not be surprised that they still hold FDR in high esteem.  But … we should not continue to be fooled by these false historic narratives.  Score one for Ocasio Cortez for finally getting something right.

So, there ‘tis.

Facts are of no consequence to AOC. Her primary focus is advancing a false narrative and an agenda that spells doom for the USA.

    Hi LARRY
It is hard for me to hear FDR called a racist when he was alive he was a man of his time.
He “accepted the things he could not change and had the courage to change the things he could.”
Frist NRA National Recover Act., All men hired under this law were paid the same wage for the job they worked, and race was not allowed to be considered in the pay they received.
Second TVA Tennessee Valley Authority Act., All men worked for the same pay scale! This was consistent throughout all of the New Deal Acts.!!
The fight for the Tuskegee air men that FDR and his wife lead for African-Americans to fly advanced aircraft in WWII. Is just one of FDR policies that stands out loud and clear to us today!!
Then under the Truman administration the desegregation of the armed forces thus you might see a long and hard fight to be taken as an equals.

All these things to curb racism from men whom are supposedly racist shame on these men for having the “Courage to change the things they can the wisdom to accept the things they cannot”?

We all have fought the issue of racism from the very foundations of our Nation and still have a ways to go before we reach our ideal goal of Liberty and Equality for all.

Your view of history is TERRIBLY flawed. You are totally wrong about the New Deal policies. They were crafted by southerners with ties to the KKK, including Hugo Black. The TVA paid white framers for the land they lost, but paid nothing to blacks. Hoover Damn employee 25,000 people … and possibly 25 blacks. Unemployment — which was about the same prior to the New Deal — rose to 20 percent for whites and more than 50 percent for blacks because they latter were being forced out of jobs whites previously did not want. The NAACP referred to the NRA as the Negro Riddance Act. FDR refused to allow blacks at his spa in Warm Springs, Georgia. FDR opposed every anti-lynching bill proposed by Republicans. He believed that Chinese and Caucasian were not fit to have children together and he incarcerated Japanese American but not the Italians and Germans — two other nation we were at war with. In the AAA white farmers were subsidized but not blacks — and many had their property taken over by whites. It goes on and on. I devote the better part of a chapter in a book I am writing on the untold story of FDR’s deep seated racism and white supremacy.

Interesting that Eleanor Roosevelt helped get black pilots into the air during the war.
