Trump Once Again Calls the Media Crazy and the Enemies of the People

As the stalemate that has caused the shutdown of the government to continue, President Trump took to Twitter to once again tear into the media. Referring to how the mainstream press has been covering his presidency since the shutdown, Trump recently tweeted:

“With all of the success that our Country is having, including the just-released jobs numbers which are off the charts, the Fake News & dishonest Media concerning me and my presidency has never been worse.”

He continued: “Many have become crazed lunatics who have given up on the TRUTH! The Fake News will knowingly lie and demean in order make the tremendous success of the Trump Administration, and me, look as bad as possible. They use non-existent sources & write stories that are total fiction. Our Country is doing so well, yet this is a sad day in America!”

“The Real Opposition Party”

In a subsequent Tweet, the president went on to say, “The Fake News Media in our Country is the real Opposition Party. It is truly the Enemy of the People! We must bring honesty back to journalism and reporting!”

While some say that Trump’s calling the press “the enemies of the people” smacks of authoritarianism, one must admit that the coverage of the president by the mainstream media is less than favorable. The president’s most recent anti-press tirade is far from the first time he has had choice words for the press. Trump has been making similar comments for a long time.

Back in July, during a speech in Kansas City, he encouraged those present to, “Stick with us. Don’t believe the crap you see from these people, the fake news…What you’re seeing and what you’re reading is not what’s happening.”

The media is justifiable, one of Trump’s favorite Twitter targets.

In a scathing October tweet he wrote, “There is great anger in our Country caused in part by inaccurate, and even fraudulent, reporting of the news. The Fake News Media, the true Enemy of the People, must stop the open & obvious hostility & report the news accurately & fairly. That will do much to put out the flame.”

Whether or not the mainstream press is indeed an “enemy of the people,” is open for much debate. But, what is clear, is that President Trump perceives them as the enemy of his administration and him personally. And, as many have learned from former Republican presidential nominees to Hillary Clinton, Trump has a way of targeting and triumphing over his enemies.

While “fake news” might be legitimately a thing, Trump is no authority on how to identify it.

Fox “News” has pretty much become synonymous with fake-news (although others arguably purvey it) and as such the combination of “sources” amount to the pot calling the kettle black.

Notwithstanding fakeness, it is up to the beholder to apply critical thinking if they possess such skills.

And never mind that the First Amendment does recognize that the “press” (aka media) does have a position in society. AKA the “Fourth Estate”, though not a phrase used therein. Still representative of that legitimate influence upon an informed and arguably democratic society.

Trump’s attacks upon same (especially those not his sycophants) simply underscore his general un-fitness to hold the office, and the abominable judgment that US voters allegedly exercised, to put him there.

One must be deaf, dumb and blind not to see the position mainstream media has taken with regard to the Trump administration; they are the purveyors of unending, biased news reporting and, at last, the American public sees it for what it’s worth…fake news!

For a president to lose the House while presiding over an economy with a 3.9% unemployment rate is appalling. This shows the degree of animosity Mr. Trump has created by his presidency.

While it is a shame, it’s the norm. This is how mid-term elections transpire in the U.S. Trump lost less seats in the house than his three predecessors in his first midterm, and gained in the Senate.

In this case, Trump triumphing over his perceived “enemy” would mean an end to the free press in this country, putting us that much closer to a dictatorship. I have seen plenty of stories from many media sources that report positive economic news, and truthfully report both the good and the bad of Trump’s administration. The fact that he doesn’t like hearing not-so-good news doesn’t mean it’s not true. Trump is the biggest purveyor of fake news.

The press is generally anti-Trump. As such, they’re prone to publish fake news as long as it’s unfavorable to Trump. Trump has a right to call the press out for such abuses. It’s up to us to act on his accusations, and tell the press to clean up its act whenever it gets out of hand, as it obviously has.
