A Christmas story by Luis Gutiérrez

A Christmas story by Luis Gutiérrez

In case you missed it, Illinois Congressman Luis Gutiérrez offered up his personal rendering of a Christmas story during hearings in which Homeland Security Director Kirstjen Nielsen was in the witness chair. In one of his cliché hyper-emotional moments, Gutiérrez compared the concept of an American border wall with the birth of Jesus. Yep! That is precisely what he did.

What if — Gutiérrez rhetorically angrily wondered — there was a wall that prevented Mary and Joseph from reaching that manger in Bethlehem? There would be no Jesus Christ today, he said. Not sure how a wall would have prevented the actual birth. Gutiérrez seems to be informationally shortchanged in biology, theology and religious history. Analogies are supposed to have at least a scintilla of comparison. On the other hand, enraged people rarely display rationality – and rage is one of Gutiérrez political hallmarks.

As a finale to his outburst, Gutiérrez rose and left the hearing. This was classic Gutiérrez theater performed on innumerable occasions in the past. His diminutive size and fiery rhetoric earned him the nickname El Gallito, “the little fighting rooster.” Others have referred to him with a different pejorative associated with a rooster, but enough said on that subject.

I have known Luis Gutiérrez even before he became a Chicago congressman in 1993. He was one of the hot-headed community activists in the old days – and 26 years in Congress has not changed that part of his personality to any significant degree. As is always the case in Chicago, Gutiérrez won his nomination and election to Congress by — to use the common expression — selling out to the Democrat Political machine.

This meant that his most heated rhetoric and sharpest criticism was never directed at the Democrat bosses in city hall despite their de facto racist policies that oppressed blacks and Hispanics. Oh yeah, he would offer up some occasional lip-service criticism in order to maintain creds with the community, but nothing that would not be winked at by the party bosses – and certainly nothing that would make them change their racist policies.

He was so favored by the political party bosses, that when given the opportunity, they gerrymandered his Fourth Congressional District to pack it with Hispanics — creating what became known as the “headphone” or “earmuff” district (pictured). It connected the two major Latin Districts in Chicago by means of a meandering arch that picked up pockets of Hispanic voters in Chicago and the Cook County suburbs. The District has long been held up as an example of the worst sort of gerrymandering. Remember that the Constitution requires congressional districts to be “compact and concise.”

Being part of the local corrupt political machine was financially rewarding to Gutiérrez – a number of which caused scandals that would sink a politician in any community but Chicago where gaming the system IS the game. In addition to his questionable real estate dealings, Gutiérrez more recently putting his wife part-time on the congressional payroll for an extraordinary $300,000 a year—almost ten times more than his top full-time staff members.

After more than two decades of self-service with little record of public service, Gutiérrez has decided to take the money and run. Congress will be without the crowing of the little fiery co… uh …rooster. Based on his achievements, Gutiérrez is not likely to be missed by adversaries or ally.

So, there ‘tis.

I love it when Democrats bloviate in their angry hyperventilated passion. Other than a few loyalists who blindly vote for them no matter what, I do believe most tune them out or laugh. They’re playing to the small (-minded) few and turning off the rest.

Strange a right-wing person putting down gerrymandering. Gerrymandering, the rights favorite way of seeking power.

How a rep of this caliber obtains a seat in congress, I’ll never know. Reminds me of a drill instructor I had in boot camp. The only thing he had going for him is an obnoxious, penetrating, grating voice but no brain behind it.
