Sentencing Delayed for Flynn

Sentencing Delayed for Flynn

In the latest in a spate of shocking political news, on Tuesday, Dec. 18, a federal judge delayed sentencing Donald Trump’s one-time national security adviser, Michael Flynn. The delay came as a surprise during a bombastic hearing where the judge tore into Flynn, and even questioned whether Flynn committed treason, before walking back those inflammatory comments.

According to Fox News, the delay came after Flynn’s attorneys initially declined an offer from U.S. District Judge Emmet G. Sullivan to delay the sentencing on charges of making false statements to the FBI, amid the judge’s questions over Flynn’s cooperation in a separate case involving illegal lobbying for Turkey. After Sullivan rebuked the defendant and warned he couldn’t guarantee that Flynn wouldn’t get jail time, the defense asked for a sentencing delay.

Flynn Has Been Very Cooperative

Judge Sullivan’s open contempt of Flynn seemed very shocking and inappropriate, especially in light of the level of cooperation the former national security advisor has been giving investigators. “General Flynn has held nothing back in regards to the special counsel’s investigation,” Flynn’s lawyer told the court, saying the case involving lobbying for Turkey is the only other area in which Flynn could be of further assistance to prosecutors.

During Tuesday’s hearing, the prosecution told Sullivan that Flynn’s cooperation played a role in the indictment this week of two Flynn associates charged with illegally lobbying for Turkey without properly registering under the Foreign Agent Registration Act (FARA). They said Flynn could have been indicted in that case had he not cooperated.

The hearing on December 18 was to be just a formality, with most people expecting Flynn to receive little or no jail time for his guilty plea from more than a year ago to making false statements to the FBI about his contacts with Russia’s ambassador. As part of that plea, he agreed to cooperate with Special Counsel Robert Mueller, and he has been doing so ever since.

Ahead of the hearing, Mueller’s team recommended that Flynn be spared jail time, citing his cooperation with the special counsel probe as part of a deal with prosecutors in December 2017.

But soon after the hearing began, Sullivan tore into Flynn for his “very serious” false statement plea, as well as other alleged misdeeds. The judge even went so far as to ask prosecutors if Flynn could have been charged with treason, telling Flynn “arguably, you sold your country out.”

“I’m not hiding my disgust, my disdain for this criminal offense,” Sullivan said.

After a brief recess, Sullivan clarified his scathing remarks, prompting the prosecutors to note Flynn’s work as a foreign agent had occurred before he took a job at the White House. He also walked back his treason comments, saying he was just inquiring out of curiosity if his crimes rose to that level, however, prosecutors told the Judge, “after looking at the definition of treason, we have no reason to believe he committed treason.”

Sullivan asked both sides to file a status report due March 13. Later Tuesday, he ordered Flynn to stay within 50 miles of the D.C. area and give up his passport by January.

You weren’t there. I wasn’t there. Whose words are the above really? Is the tone of the judge, actually being accurately portrayed? Were these the actual words? You really have to have ALL OF THIS FIGURED OUT before you have any business casting aspersions as to the appropriateness of whatever interchange factually or allegedly took place in a courtroom, and you have no access at all, to anything beyond that which took place in a public courtroom.

It’s most interesting to hear a judge outraged at possible treason when most of the politicians/judges were not even remotely concerned about the Uranium One Deal, the Pay for Play Clinton Fdn, the DNC IT guys who had access to many of our legislators’ Congessionsal emails, and after declaring the hacking of the DNC computers, the DNC refusing to allow the FBI to examine the hacked system. Curiouser and curiouser…..

There seems to be more to this story than what the public is being told.Typical of the government as well as the fbi. I don’t trust any of them to do things ethically and honestly. They are all crooked.

After the treason remarks. Flynn should ask the Judge to recuse himself, or file a motion to have him removed.
