Trump puts on the BIG MO

Trump puts on the BIG MO
October 09
19:14 2018

This is about the time that political pundits talk about the “big mo.” It does not matter if a candidate or a party is a bit behind or a bit ahead at this juncture. It depends  on who develops that all-important momentum. In this moment, it appears that the GOP is starting to rev up and the Democrats are beginning to sputter. Trump is on a roll.

I never imagined that I would connect my mother’s parental wisdom with any advice found in the left-wing screeds of MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow. But, one day – in the middle of one of her hour-long propaganda harangues — there was a gem of good counsel.

My mother often advised that what people say is different than what they do – and it is what they do that matters. Pretty basic, eh? Maddow offered up the same good advice in terms of President Trump. She said that we should look past all of Trump’s personality flaws and pay attention to what he and his administration are actually doing.

I agree completely. It has been the core of my explanation as to why a person like me – and tens of millions of others – can wince at Trump’s pugnacious personality, his petty squabbles, his all too frequent alienation from facts and his tasteless braggadocio and still support him and his administration on the merits of his actions and accomplishment. It is the accomplishments, stupid.

The difference between Maddow and me is that whatever the President is doing – such as naming a lot of conservative judges, cutting taxes, deregulating the economy, engaging in negotiations with North Korea, etc. – horrifies Maddow and the left and delights those of us on the right.

While Maddow & Co. have been spending their time trying to convince the nation that Trump is a corrupt, ineffective bozo, he and his appointees have been accomplishing a lot of good stuff. He is accomplishing so much that it has become impossible for even the left-wing media to spin it away or ignore it.

During the campaign, the liberal establishment hit Trump with everything short of an indictment for pedophilia — and they lost. That failed strategy continues to this day. As we approach the midterms, Trump and the Republicans are being bombarded with endless specious attacks. The prosecutorial New York Times has charged Trump with criminal fraud – or is it his father, brother or his cleaning lady. I never realized that was within the jurisdiction of a newspaper to criminally indict people.

In an effort to get at Trump, the left threw away the Constitution to smear his nominee for the Supreme court. They say it is not about overturning the 2016 election, but leaders of the Democratic party have openly promised to impeach Trump, Pence and now Justice Kavanaugh. With Congresswoman Maxine Waters as a leading proponent, the plan should be recorded in history as the “cuckoo coup.”

And what has been the result of this #NeverTrump Resistance Movement strategy? Trump’s personal popularity jumped six points in the CNN poll and actually hit 51 percent in the Rasmussen poll. This is not difficult to understand if you are not blinded by hatred or do not spend all your time in the New York/D.C. bubble.

It is NOT what Trump says – foolish as much of it is. It is what he is doing and accomplishing. Unemployment is at a 49 year low of 3.7 percent. By economic standards, that is considered full employment. With labor getting scarcer, employers are increasing wages. One report has the holiday season workers getting 50 percent increases over last year – and, for the first time, getting health benefits. Amazon boosted wages across the board. The combination of tax cuts and low unemployment are not starting to be seen in rising incomes.

The stock market continues to hover at the record highs achieved a few month ago. Trillions of dollars that were parked overseas to avoid our past onerous taxes are now heading home. Trump’s strategy to end NAFTA to get a better deal from Mexico and Canada has paid off despite months of reporting that it would not.

Trump and the Republicans have kept their promise to address the opioid crisis with powerful legislation – and they have done just that. Veterans who one had to wait, and maybe die, in line at the VA hospitals can now get treatment quickly from private sector medical providers.

Trump has taken a 40-year stand-off in North Korea that enabled the Kim family to go nuclear and brought Kim Jong-un to the negotiating table.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo is in Pyongyang as you read this. There has been no more saber-rattling missile launches and belligerent theats coming from Kim, and progress continues toward denuclearization.

So far – and I emphasize, for far – Trump has put two conservative justices on the Supreme Court and will likely appoint a couple hundred federal judges in a first term. (If Maddow ever read this commentary, this is where she will be having palpitations).

Despite the biweekly news report that Trump is about to upend the investigation of Special Counsel Robert Mueller by firing Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, Trump has again left those wishful thinking reporters with enough egg on their faces to open up a breakfast restaurant. If a picture is worth a thousand words, just the image of Rosenstein walking down the steps of Air Force one behind Trump and alongside White House Chief-of-Staff John Kelly should be enough to wipe out several million words from those repetitiously inaccurate reports.

The voters may groan over each new presidential tweet, but they are beginning to take note of some very popular accomplishments.
