Senator Nelson Already Blaming Russians For Possible Defeat

Florida’s incumbent Democrat Senator Bill Nelson is likely to be facing a very tough challenge from Governor Rick Scott – the pre-emptive favorite to win the Republican Senate nomination. After years in office and with very little record of accomplishment, the Sunshine State’s senior senator is starting to take on a Dorian Grey appearance – referring to the painting, not the lead character.

Nelson recently announced that those “under-every-rock” Russians are now meddling in the Florida election. Nelson has accused the Ruskies of having “penetrated” several county-based election systems in advance of the November election. He said that the Russian hackers “now have free rein to move about.”

According to Nelson, “The threat is real and election officials — at all levels — need to address the vulnerabilities.” Of course, election officials at all levels are already addressing any vulnerabilities. Contrary to the anti-Trump media narrative – that nothing is being done – the major intelligence and law enforcement agencies are working with local election officials to head off any problems that can corrupt the outcome of our elections.

Nelson refuses to name the counties that have been “penetrated,” or give any details as to what the hackers hope to achieve. He claims that is all classified.

If such a “penetration” has taken place, it is news to the various election officials in Florida. Despite Nelson’s claim, Florida’s election officials said that they have seen no evidence of any untoward activity by Russians or any other bad actors.

It should also be noted that the ability of hackers to “move about” our election system is very limited. Since polling places are not online, there is no way Russian operatives or any other ill-intentioned hackers can cast phony votes, take away votes or switch votes. Even the central locations where votes are accumulated and counted – and where backup systems double check results — there is very limited potential of altering any election outcome. Most voting irregularities are the work of individuals at the various locations.
If there is anything we have learned from the investigation by Special Counsel Robert Mueller it is that the Russians concentrated their efforts on stirring the pot of chaos through social media. Mueller has indicted more than two dozen Russian nationals for meddling – but specifically stated that no Americans were involved.

Nelson’s headline-grabbing announcement reminded me of my young days during the height of the Cold War. Virtually every troublesome event – including natural disasters – was blamed on the Russians and their nuclear bomb tests – on land, underground, in the air and under ocean water. If Japan got hit with an earthquake, it was those damn Russians and their atomic bomb testing. An unusual cold snap in June and it was those damn Russians and their atomic bomb testing.

Nelson is old enough to recall those times. Perhaps, he is reaching into the depths of his memory banks to resurrect that old canard. No need to invent a new excuse when there already is one on the shelf waiting to be dusted off.
