As in most major cities, the black residents of Chicago vote Democrat – sometimes as high as 95 percent. It has always been assumed that the Chicago Democrat political machine had a lock on that vote.

It has also been imponderable why that should be the case. Nothing has oppressed urban blacks more than the longstanding Democrat control of our major cities. With virtual one-party control of the cities, Democrats have maintained racist policies that have kept millions of black Americans segregated, impoverished, uneducated and welfare dependent since Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal of 1930.

It is the reason that virtually every major civil rights demonstration, protest and riot outside the old Democrat Dixie have happened in Democrat-controlled cities. It is the reason why Martin Luther King chose Chicago as the first northern city to bring his civil rights movement.

I first became involved in minority issues in Chicago more than 50 years ago – and spent a lot of time in the inner city since then. Virtually nothing has changed in the ghetto except for one thing. Those all-black segregated neighborhoods are a lot more dangerous today than they were back then.

Not only were the people of the “hood’ badly disserved by the white power structure, but also by a cadre of black politicians beholden to the white political bosses for their position, power, prestige and profit. In the plantation politics of big city governance, many took on the roles of “House Negros” (to be polite).

Despite the mistreatment by the racists in city hall, blacks would vent their political anger and frustration against non-existent Republicans. Urban Democrats – with Chicago as a prime example — were in charge of those police departments that were killing young black men, or not protecting the community from the deadly gangbangers and drug cartelians; in charge of a separate-but-unequal school systems that were not educating black kids while sending kids from white schools to college; in charge of the prosecutors and courts that were filling up our prisons with black kids, and for longer sentences, than comparable white offenders; in charge of the housing departments that allowed crony slumlords to skirt the law with dangerous overcrowded tenements; and in charge of the streets and parks departments that allowed infrastructure in black neighborhoods to deteriorate. These were all the manifestation of institutional de facto racism.

But times, they are a changin’.

In the past few years, there have been signs that the black community is finally catching on. On my Facebook, I have many black friends, many from Chicago, of course. They are not happy campers. They are talking about supporting challengers to what in Chicago is just referred to as “The Machine.” Not only are they speaking out against the boys in city hall, but against those black alderman, state representatives, state senators and congressmen who have ill-served the community for generations. Many even express disappointments in President Obama – often in very harsh terms. As one community leader put it, “He (Obama) ain’t done shit for us.”

While the black community in Chicago has tolerated more institutional racism and oppression under the rule of Democrats, the thing that appears to have finally triggered a detachment of political loyalty is the high number of people being murdered in the Windy City – especially all those innocent children. It has become statistically more dangerous to live on the westside of Chicago than in Afghanistan. This past weekend alone, 60 people were shot – 10 fatally.

Recently, there was a full-scale protest against Mayor Rahm Emmanuel with demands that he resign. One protester interviewed on the news said that no one should assume that the black community in Chicago is a Trump-free zone. When folks showed up with anti-Trump signs, they were booed by more than a few protestors.

One YouTube video that went viral last year featured two inner-city guys directing their ire at the Democrats. “They tell us the Republicans are the problem, but when I look around, I don’t see no Republicans. I only see Democrats.”
Black loyalty to the Democratic Party has never made sense, but it would appear that – as the saying goes – the chickens are coming to roost.

I will not be holding my breath. They (the people of Chicago) will get rid of Emmanuel (good riddance), but they will elect some black person (probably a woman) because the person is black. Nothing will change other than the murder rate, which of course is the guns fault.

Give him a chance. You will see an improvement before his first term is up.
Part of the issue not mentioned is the public schools in these areas.
The schools are understaffed. The schools deal with HUGE issues like students who do not attend regularly (I know, I teach in an urban school), language barriers, and being told by others not to “act white”. (oh, and gang violence, fear of gang violence)

Excellent article. I love it. Yes, it’s a little hard to blame Republicans when they are not even in office in places like Chicago. Time for more African Americans to wake up and stop just giving their votes to the Democrats. They have done nothing for you, especially folks like Rahm Emanuel. And, it’s funny how Chicago is Obama’s hometown, yet since his presidency, Chicago has become the murder capital of the USA, and African Americans there are doing far worse than almost anywhere in the country. Great job Obama! Time to #walkaway and give the GOP a try.

“. . . . were in charge of those police departments that were killing young black men, and . . . separate-but-unequal school systems that were not educating black kids while sending kids from white schools to college”. I do not agree with these two statements. The ratio of black men being killed by police and black men being killed by blacks is very high. With blacks being killed by blacks way more than any blacks being killed by cops. And many ,many blacks ARE being sent to college with diplomas that were GIVEN to them, not earned. Thinking it would help them in life. Same with college diplomas being handed out, not earned, thinking it will help them through life. Same thing with jobs. Not qualified but hired anyway causing low quality service throughout companies. At least tell the truth if you are going to write about them. But I do believe that the Democrats are in control of them and have been for decades. They have them right where they want them. All they want from them is their votes and then they turn a blind eye and a deaf ear to them and their problems. Throw them a few crumbs and they shut up. They are still slaves to the democrats and they vote for them. Unbelievable.

Don’t blame it all on the democrats. They have the blacks where they want them, but the blacks have to stand up for themselves and accept responsibilities for their actions and inaction. Such as blacks killing blacks and blaming it on others. A white or a cop kills a black and they have a hissy fit. A black kills a black and not a word from them. Blacks kill many, many more blacks than any cops do. Wise up people.

Oh boy, it IS ABOUT TIME that the Blacks begin to acknowledge that the Democrats have ONLY tightened the chains on them and MADE THEM slaves to “government” largess! The sad thing is that the uneducated, unknowing, and Welfare-Dependent “POOR” have been brain-washed to be beholden to the FREE stuff that politicians GIVE them, in EXCHANGE for their VOTES! THAT is the bottom line! Their F’IN VOTES are what count! Sure, why bother getting an EDUCATION when having 6, 8, 10 babies INCREASES your monthly income? WTF?

I agree with most all of this, but why not say “servants” instead of “house negro(e)s”? (yes, with an E).
But yes, the liberal left is responsible for keeping poor people poor, and more people are waking up to this fact.

Larru. please be advised. The word black is an adjective and not a noun. As a journalist you should know the difference. We are indigenous copper colored of the Americas. We are Americans that are called indians. Do the research and perpetuating this lie. The Europeans and folks like you need to read the true history and not the white history. It wasn’t all Roosevelt’s New Deal as it was LBJ’s Civil Rights Act of 1963. He was quoted to say “I’ll have these nigger’s voting democrat for the next two hundred years. Let’s get the republic back…if we can. By the way the word black is 15th century middle english that means PALE. Webster’s Dictionary 1828 Addition. The truth is in the old books.

Hmmm… Regarding Obama, whites complained that he was doing too much for black people. But black people complained that he wasn’t doing enough for them. Can’t win. But he was a lot smarter than the person in the WH right now, who is appealing to the white supremacy folks. (Yes, I know… some of your best friends are black. Yadda yadda…)

Why do Democrats control urban areas? Because urban areas tend to be more liberal, while rural areas tend to be more conservative. No secrets there. But nobody complains about the number of midwestern or southern cities controlled by conservatives.

    Ah well… whatcha gonna do?

How many of the black demonstrators are registered voters? Blacks need to form a coalition of all organizations and black churches, etc and vote out ALL Democrats in local and state office. The Democrats have been BS Blacks in Illinois too long. They beg for your vote and give you NOTHING but promises. I am not suggesting that you support the Republicans especially in federal elections. What you are demanding better is schools, better policing, and access to healthcare. Including dental. BUT BLACKS MUST REGISTER TO VOTE
