Liberal Caterwauling in the Face of the Kennedy Resignation

Just when you think the irrational Trump-hating radical left could not be more unhinged and more … well … just plain nutty, along comes Justice Kennedy. It’s hard to imagine that such a mild-mannered man could produce the crazed response that is currently flowing through the Democratic Party and the #NeverTrump media like a plague. We are witnessing nothing less than pandemic panic.

The words flowing out of the mouths of those cable news personalities, their panels of parroting pundits and across the pages of the liberal print media include “devastating,” “horrific,” “existential threat,” and even the “the end of America as we know it.” Actually, on the latter point, it may be the end of the America that they, the left-wing establishment, have known for so many years. And that is not necessarily a bad thing.

The word “resistance” is back in the lexicon of the left. They promise that they will do everything possible to stop President Trump from appointing yet another justice to the Supreme Court. For the most part, the CNN and MSNBC personalities and their stable of sycophantic contributors are engaged in a political version of a war dance. They pledge to do everything possible (which ain’t much) to prevent the appointment of that awful conservative political hack. They are going to force Trump to withdraw the nomination by exposing the nominee’s sordid history and utter incompetence. There is no way they will allow that person to be seated on the highest court in the land.

Oh … but wait! The candidate has not even been named yet. No matter, the Democrats and the media are already applying the war paint. Nothing is more indicative of the intentions of the left than the premature launching of their attack on a nominee who has not yet been even named. It shows their disregard … nay, contempt … for facts and issues. It is merely yet another expression of their visceral hatred for the president and all those who support his policies and appointments – if not his personality.

Things have gotten so bad for the crazed left that MSNBC’s Mike Brzezinski has introduced the frequently exasperated gasp as part of her political mourning routine. For lack of any strategy to actually stop the appointment, the elite media resorts to attacks on the Trump personality. His ego. His bellicosity. We have seen that movie many times before – in fact, much too often.

Within the ranks of the crazed left, there are a few rational voices. It is not that they dislike the prospect of a Trump appointment any less than the panic-stricken, but they are still functioning in the world of reality. Both CNN’s Chris Cuomo and David Axelrod have raised the white flag in the battle over the new justice. Both have long histories in the practical and pragmatic epicenter of Democrat politics and they understand the reality of the situation – the futility of the resistance strategy.

What can the left do to stop the seating of a new conservative judge? Months before the retirement of Kennedy, the liberal-leaning National Public Radio (NPR)’s Nina Totenberg wrote this on the station’s online blog:
“Democrats may hold 49 votes in the Senate but for all practical purposes, they have been completely disarmed when it comes to opposing President Trump’s judicial nominees.”

There you have it. A succinct and accurate assessment of the situation the Democrats and the left now face. For all the blabber and bluster, they are on the verge of a “yuge” defeat. Yes, the resistance folks can yell that no nominee should be advanced in an election year (although that past argument only applied to presidential election years when there might have been a change in the White House). They can say that no president under investigation should appoint justices. They can call Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell a hypocrite for blocking Obama’s last appointment. Hardball’s Chris Matthews demands that the people should have a say in the selection. What is he talking about? The opportunity for we the people to stop Trump from naming Supreme Court justices ended on Election Day in 2016.

California Senator Kamala Harris argues that the president has an obligation to appoint someone more moderate to maintain the current balance of the Court – someone who would be considered a swing vote. Of course, Harris failed to point out where in the Constitution that obligation is articulated. Was that obligation fulfilled when Obama appointed Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan – two verrrrry liberal candidates.

They can roll out all kinds of meaningless talking point and vapid theories, but the facts remain. As Totenberg said, the Democrats are “completely disarmed.” That leaves the left with only one strategy, and that is to stomp their feet and scream like a toddler who just had a toy taken away.

There are some Democrats who argue that it is not even worth the effort of a fight. They see it as a distraction from issues that may better serve their campaign strategies. In making it a philosophic fight-to-the-death, those Democrat senators up for re-election in states that Trump won will be squeezed between the proverbial rock and a hard place. The battle over the Kennedy seat may be just what the GOP needs to increase the Party’s numbers in the Senate.

MSNBC’s pseudo intellectual Jon Meacham stated that this was a payday for the many who “held their noses and voted for Trump.” He was right. I know, because I was one of those millions of people. I admit to their accusation that the Supreme Court weighed heavily on my mind when I cast that ballot. It was not the only issue, but a BIG one.
