Democrats keep sending in the clowns. Why?

Whenever an accident occurred in the circus – an aerialist falling from the high wire or an elephant stepping on a trainer – the call would go out to “send in the clowns” as a diversion. That Barnum and Bailey tradition was memorialized in a song by the same name.

The #NeverTrump resistance folks have their own version of the clowns in the persons of those modern-day comedians who garner public attention by doing their own version of pratfalls. In many ways, the “clown alley” (the collective designation for a group of clowns) of stage and on-air comedians serve the same purpose as those big-footed, bulbous-nosed colorful characters of the center ring – to distract attention from the tragedy that is the leftward drifting Democratic Party and the policies they would impose.

They incessantly poke fun – and not always funny fun – at everything about Donald Trump: his appearance, his mental state, his misstatements, his character and on and on. Like their ringmasters in the entertainment and news industry, they focus on mostly personality issues to avoid the very thing that keeps Trump’s favorable ratings going up – policies, programs and accomplishments.

Like the circus counterparts, they engage in over-the-top and outlandish theatrics to gain public attention through their “barkers” in the elitist mass media – whether it is Kathy Griffin performing a satire of Salome with a fake severed head of President Trump, Michelle Wolf bombing at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner with her poorly preformed imitation of a roast or Samantha Bee going for the shock-value laugh by using the c-word.

Saturday Night Live (SNL) does a regular routine with one of the left’s most favored clowns, Alec Baldwin. His avowed hatred for Trump is evident in virtually every sketch and reaffirmed by his off-air rants. His role as the number-one court jester in the pantheon of anti-trump comics makes people forget his abusive phone call to his young daughter, his physical fights with paparazzi (upon whom his career depends) and his oft-stated – and oft-broken – promise to leave America whenever a Republican president is elected. Baldwin’s funniest laugh line to date may be his recent claim that he would beat Trump in a presidential election.

Clowndom is a lot like the #NeverTrump resistance movement. (Well duh! It is part of it.) They disparage any comedian who strays from the script of constant criticism of the president. Kathy “off-with-their-heads” Griffin called out black comedian Kevin Hart for insufficient anti-trump material in his act. She sees comedians as a form of whistleblowers on the Trump administration. I guess she prefers the whistle to the iconic bicycle horn.

In chastising Hart, Griffin commits the double fault of sexism and racism, which the greater media ignores when engaged in by their own. In an effort to explain Hart’s lack of Trump-hatred schtick, Griffin said, “I personally think that’s a pussy move because he’s a black man.” That punchline should have the left rolling in the aisles, as they say.

What all this funny business does is attempt to slander Trump and distract inquiring minds from the very real critical issues of the day and the left-leaning Democratic Party’s failure to offer up policies that the public would embrace. We are, after all, a right-of-center nation and the further the Democrats are dragged to the left by their radical base, the more they need a distraction by sending in the clowns.

Fortunately, the political clowns of comedy have no more ability to distract the public from the issues that impact on their lives than the real clowns of the circus who can’t really get people to look away from the drama in the shadows. We the people are a lot smarter than they think. We can tell the difference between a large number of people piling out of a small car and serious efforts to avert a nuclear war with North Korea.

**FOOTNOTE: I had my own revenge on Alec Baldwin. At a time when he called for the elimination of all those romantic horse-drawn carriages in our cities (a feature I like), I proposed to re-name those bags under the horses’ hindquarters to catch the you-know-what as “Baldwin Bags.” It caught on with the New York livery folks. You can find my modest contribution to the lexicon on the Urban Dictionary.
