Rob Reiner is Still a Meathead

Back in the 1970s, “All in the Family” was a top-rated television show. It featured Carroll O’Conner as Archie Bunker, a rather intolerant but still lovable character. His television daughter was married to a first-generation uber liberal young man played by Rob Reiner. Archie’s wife and daughter tended to play a placating role between the two extremes. Bunker would often refer to the Reiner character as “meathead.”

Now some 39 years after the show’s final season, it turns out that Rob Reiner is still playing the uber-liberal meathead character in real life. Like the old television character, Reiner is given to hyperbolic, exaggerated and often outlandish statements. Given that propensity, Reiner was a welcomed guest on a recent episode of the equally hyperbolic, exaggerated and often outlandish Morning Joe on MSNBC.

His purpose was to promote his new documentary about the Iraq War entitled “Shock and Awe” – a military phrase that described the amazing military power that brought down the regime of murderous dictator Saddam Hussein after an amazingly short military battle.

We should keep in mind that for those harboring extreme views – as does Reiner – the word “documentary” is merely a euphemism for “propaganda.” The movie is designed to perpetuate the false narrative that the Iraq War was the result of evil intentions by the Bush administration, and that is was based on a single grand lie – the existence of weapons of mass destruction (WMDs).

Even as Reiner emphatically argued that “we must stick to the truth” and “that (it) is the only thing that will save us.” Reiner contends that the Bush administration was “wanting to go to war even before we were attacked (on 911).” He added that “They jumped on that and said let’s go to war.”

Instead, according to Reiner, we now have the “tearing up of the agreement with Iran” and a president worrying about his future. “I get real scared,” he says. He makes such outlandish statements that we the people are being fooled by “state-run media outlets like FOX News, Breitbart, Sinclair and Alex Jones.” Of course, that is a remarkable untruth by a man pleading for truth – and especially since most of the major media is leaning to the left. Were they state-owned during the Obama years?

Like any half-baked propagandists, Reiner completely ignores the facts and the truth about the Iraq war. First and foremost was the Saddam Hussein problem. He was a rogue leader who had just used WMDs against the Kurds inside Iraq. As a Sunni, he had murdered an untold number of Iraqi Shi’ites. He had invaded Kuwait as the first part of a Hitler-like empire scheme. He was developing a nuclear program in violation of international law. This was one really bad dude.

The United Nations had periodically won concessions from Hussein only to have them repeatedly ignored or broken. He was sanctioned by the UN on 17 occasions. The generally wimpish UN had finally had enough of Hussein and authorized a regime change in Iraq. Consider that carefully. It was the UN, with the support of most of the nations of the world, that called for a regime change.

People like Reiner would have us believe in the contemporary false narrative that President Bush pursued the war like a trigger-happy cowboy heading to a gunfight. Not so. Following the UN authorization, Bush took the issue to Congress, which overwhelmingly endorsed America’s leadership in ousting Hussein. Among the most notable proponents of the war were Senators John Kerry and Hillary Clinton — who later were propagators of the false narrative against Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney and Secretary of Defense Don Rumsfeld.

The contention that Hussein never had WMDs and that they were the sole rationale for the war is totally untrue. He most certainly had them before the war, and there were reports at the time that the gas weaponry was being shipped off to Syria – which may explain a lot.

Some 65 nations, including America’s closest allies, participated in the military action to topple Hussein. The war was brilliantly executed with minimal casualties. It was a bright shining moment for our men and women in uniform and our technical military superiority.

But just because the Reiner version of the false narrative is so terribly wrong and dishonest, does not mean it all ended well. It was not the war that failed, but the anticipated peace. If the Bush administration is to be criticized – along with the UN and our allies – it was for putting Nouri al-Maliki in charge. Rather than unify the nation with a coalition government, Maliki turned against the Sunni population with vengeance and kicked off a civil war that was only indirectly related to the ousting of Hussein.

After several years of civil war, and when there were hopeful signs of stabilizing Iraq under new leadership, President Obama pulled out the troops and set off another round of horrific events with the rise of ISIS – which he maladroitly and tragically viewed as a “junior varsity” threat.

President Trump and his new rules of engagement – essentially untying the one hand that the Obama policies had tied behind the back of our military – have resulted in much greater influence for America in the Middle East. ISIS has been decimated and Iraq is beginning to rebuild.

Reiner has joined docu-propagandist Michael Moore as purveyors of false narratives to promote their narrow partisan political and philosophic agenda.

FOOTNOTE: To understand just how out of touch Reiner is with reality, he recently said on The View that this was the first time a foreign entity (Russia) has attempted to interfere with our elections. For a political activist of his age, that is an astounding display of ignorance or an astonishing lie. Russia, China, and others have meddled in our elections for generations. It is what they do. So sayeth virtually every Intel leader in public testimony. P.S. We also meddle in other country’s elections. Have we forgotten the Obama team working to defeat Benjamin Netanyahu or bugging the phone of Angela Merkel?

Well said. Unfortunately, liberals’ minds are made up. They have developed a selective blindness. I have yet to see even one liberal who was brought up in schools since the 1960’s who was willing to even consider seeing the other view. Their ammunition consists of rumors, lies, and insults.
