Politicians and other public figures have become champions of apologizing without … well … apologizing. Samantha Bee is the latest. Rather than abjectly begging forgiveness from Ivanka Trump for using the dreaded c-word, she offered more of a convoluted explanation.

We have to keep in mind that Bee’s use of the c-word was not the product of a momentary mental lapse. It was written into the script, reviewed and approved by the Full Frontal staff – including station representatives and Samantha Bee, herself. She read it as planned. So, what was the plan?

The part of her less-than-convincing apology was her rationalization that it was an attempt to “reclaim” the c-word. In other words, they were hoping to legitimatize that obscenity as a normal part of public dialogue, much as the left has done with the f-word, the b-word and a litany of other hitherto verboten vulgar pejoratives. Bee has used the word before and was apparently hoping to make it a mainstay in her routine.

The common excuse provided to and used by Bee for such on-air vulgarity is that she is a comedian. In other words, comedians are not culturally bound by civility or good conduct. They are expected to be crude, rude and occasionally nude to get laughs. It is the verbal counterpart to what has been called visual “prat-fall humor.” Show a man getting hit in the crotch and you get a laugh every time.

These are only jokes, according to the mantra of the left. But are they? The Bee c-word joke was intended to make a serious point about immigration policy – which, in and of itself, is not a joke. For reasons known only to the scriptwriter, it was decided that the “joke” was to be brought home by a vulgar insult to First Daughter Ivanka Trump.

Why she would be made the brunt of the “joke” remains somewhat of a mystery since she has not been in the foreground of the immigration issue. More appropriate targets might have been leaders in Congress, the Attorney General or the President, himself. Maybe it was just a matter of the c-word searching for a target – and it had to be a woman, any woman excluded from the protected class by the hypocritical liberal feminists.

Playing the game of What IF … what if the c-word had been used against Michelle Obama or, God forbid, the oldest Obama daughter? It would have been rightfully condemned as sexist – and even racist. What if that “joke” had been told by a male comedian? How funny would that be?

As a punchline, Bee simply called out Ivanka as a “feckless (you know what).” That is not a joke. That is simply a vulgar insult that garners only a shock-value laugh. Would the audience have roared without the use of the c-word? She could have called Ivanka a “feckless broad” or your “feckless female,” but that would not have brought either the laughter or the days of coverage by the media. It would not have advanced the coarsening of our public dialogue, which schizophrenic liberals simultaneously encourage and condemn.

I have a good friend who has been a very successful comedy writer – Home Improvement, The Golden Girls, Bob Hope and a long list of impressive credentials. He is also a diehard New York liberal Democrat. Our political differences have not impaired the friendship, although we discuss politics a lot – and share a lot of laughs doing so. He calls the gratuitous use of obscene words “lazy comedy.” It is not cleaver. It is not witty.

It is not even remotely funny. But it will get the predictable shock-value laugh that they cannot get otherwise.
Bee did not render up a joke. There was no surprising punchline. It was simply a crude insult. Holding to my friend’s standard, one can say that Samantha Bee is one of the lazier comedians.

Larry Horst is just another thin-skinned butt-hurt conservative. This entire article is BS. Proves the Right can dish it out but can’t take it.

Rather, your comments prove that you are a stereotypical liberal elitist, devoid of any moral compass, who who embraces vulgarity & profanity. Without doubt, you also advocate unchecked abortion and a host of similar debased views.

It’s true! Samantha Bee crossed a line. Glad she admitted it and apologized. So how about the same appropriate apologies from the person who we elected to lead (not privately hired to entertain) our country and the free world? Should Samantha Bee lose her job? If so…

Very well said. I am disgusted with all things Hollywood: actors, comedians, media; Rude & crude with a sense that they have the “right” to spew their filth on the public. It will not be long before the English language will be nothing but the verbalization of a few vulger words & of course finger pointing.
