Crooks for Cuomo

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo confirms that crooks are an important part of the Democrat base.  He recently issued 24,000 pardons – yeah, 24,000! – to convicted felons so that they can fully participate in our representative form of government.  In other words, they can vote.  This came after Cuomo had previously issued an executive order giving 36,000 parolees the right to vote.

It has been well established by polls and studies that criminals, prisoners and the formerly incarcerated prefer the Democratic Party by overwhelming numbers.  This is also true of the many foreigners who currently reside in our country illegally.  That is why Democrats have lobbied to extend the vote to prisoners and make it possible for illegal aliens to cast ballots.  It is why Democrats refuse to secure the border.  They see every new illegal alien as a Democrat voter – now and in the future.  None of this should come as a surprise to anyone.

We are said to live under the rule-of-law, but that seems less true every day.  It is currently illegal for convicted felons to vote.  The crimes cost them their franchise.  That is the law.  Only American citizens are allowed to vote.  That is the law.  These are election laws that Democrats shamelessly ignore.

What Governor Cuomo did is particularly egregious.  He flagrantly abused his power to circumvent the law.  The power to pardon was designed to address and correct rare situations in which criminal justice procedures had performed an apparent injustice.  They have been granted to people who have left behind long past criminal offenses to lead lives of exemplary service.  Pardons were never intended to be part of voter registration requirements.

Cuomo’s action is an obscene assault on the spirit of the pardon process.  His pardons are not based on merit, but simply to put more numbers on the voting rolls.  Whether individuals who have “paid their debt to society” should have their voting rights restored is worthy of debate – and there are good arguments on both sides.  If changes are needed, however, they should come from the source of the current laws – the legislatures that passed them in the first place.

The power to pardon was never meant to usurp the legislative process.  It was never meant to nullify the decisions of the judiciary on a wholesale basis – and without specific just cause.

Though Cuomo has the legal right to pardon anyone for any violation of state law – just as President Trump has the legal right to pardon anyone for any violation of federal law – the New York chief executive does great harm to the entire concept of a small-d democratic system with his crass disregard for very important and long-standing traditions and his trampling on the spirit of the law for personal political advantage.

Now that Cuomo’s technical legality has trumped morality, will we see other opportunist Democrat governors taking up the same tactic?  I am betting, yes.
