Al Sharpton: The civil rights snake oil salesman

In a recent broadcast of his MSNBC show “PoliticsNation,” black activist and self-described civil rights leader Al Sharpton said that “criminal justice is the new civil rights.” He’s correct.

As a person who has worked closely with the criminal justice system in Chicago and Cook County, I can say with certainty that it is racially biased – from arrests, prosecutions, court verdicts, sentencing to parole. This is not a debate. The numbers and the studies establish that fact. In the past 60 years, more than 39,000 people have been murdered in Chicago, and a disproportionate amount of them have been black – and even worse, children. Hundreds of thousands have been run through the criminal justice system, and a disproportionate amount of them have been black. They suffer more prosecution and longer sentences than whites involved in similar crimes.

Sharpton has spent a career railing against these injustices within portions of the law enforcement communities. I say “portions of the law enforcement community” because it is not a pandemic problem in America. Sharpton never goes to the source, however, even though it is easily identifiable.

Rather, he uses civil rights issues for race-baiting – the race-baiting he depends on for his prominence, power and profits. He has earned millions by – in what he calls –  fighting against prejudice and racial injustice — especially on behalf of the most oppressed in our inner cities.

If Sharpton were sincerely interested in bringing about change, he would go to the source of the problem. Why would he not bring his public demonstrations, campaigns and protests to the doorsteps of those responsible? The answer is obvious. He is part of the problem. He is part of the political power structure that governs over the last vestiges of institutional racism in America – the urban Democratic Party.

Unlike Martin Luther King, who marched on those responsible, Sharpton is a front man for the very people MLK opposed in the solid Democrat south-land and in the urban cities long controlled by the Democratic Party. While MLK kept his generally Republican-leaning in the background to put civil rights in the fore, Sharpton is a dyed-in-the-wool partisan Democrat – having even sought a presidential nomination.

For Sharpton, it is not about real civil and constitutional rights, but the faux civil rights of generational impoverishment and welfare dependency. He has done virtually nothing to help the segregated masses in our great cities because the status quo is the basis of his and his fellow urban Democrats’ power.

For more than a century, the plight of segregated, impoverished, unemployed and uneducated blacks in our major cities has been chronicled in newspapers and been the subject of countless academic, civic and governmental studies. To understand the frustration of life under Democrat urban rule, one only need to look at the scores of demonstrations, protests and even violent riots. They overwhelmingly – and that is an understatement – occur where Democrats have governed for generations.

To understand Sharpton’s real role in the civil rights movement, one needs to heed the words of two black activists of different times and different demeanor, Booker T. Washington and Malcolm X.

Washington warned:

“There is another class of colored people who make a business of keeping the troubles, the wrongs, and the hardships of the Negro race before the public. Having learned that they are able to make a living out of their troubles, they have grown into the settled habit of advertising their wrongs — partly because they want sympathy and partly because it pays. Some of these people do not want the Negro to lose his grievances, because they do not want to lose their jobs.”

The fiery Malcolm X put it in much more graphic and contemporary language. He believed that both parties were racists, but that “the Democratic Party is more racist than the Republican Party.” In a speech given just before his assassination, he said: “The Democrats are playing you for a political chump and if you vote for them, not only are you a chump, you are a traitor to your race.”

Rarely has there been a false narrative so widely believed or so easily disproved as the common belief that the urban Democratic Party is a party of civil rights. In fact, it governs over the worst racial oppression in America. One of the reasons it is so successful in avoiding responsibility is people like Al Sharpton, who will not march against the racist policies of a party that rewards him so richly.

The question arises…. has the man ever paid the $5.5 Million dollars which he owed to the IRS for his back taxes.?

    — it’s only been 4/5 years.?.. or is calling for the BLM group to help him through all of the torment and pain he’s had to go through because he’s black.?

    I’m just asking….

I’m anything BUT conservative, but I remember years ago when Al Sharpton was just a fat guy in a blue valour sweat suit with more bling than a heavyweight championship belt. He was a self-declared “gifted preacher” as a child. He led a rush-hour demonstration that snarled traffic on the Bklyn. Bridge for hours. Was it to fight for the [later discredited] Tawana Brawley? Or was it an opportunist Sharpton looking for the spotlight on himself? Not to mention that he ran for a number of offices within NYC, while living in Teaneck, NJ. Personally, I’d have never voted for him in the first place. He’s a charlatan!
