When Comedy Becomes Propaganda

Individuals of conservative persuasion can get pretty vulgar and ugly on Facebook. Often, their remarks seem to be produced from bile rather than grey matter. But at least those are the comments of individuals, and we see plenty of the same behavior from the other side.

What is more disturbing is how the left has brought vulgarity into the major communications platforms – radio, television and movies. It infects both news and entertainment, and all those in-between programs. Nowhere is it more prevalent and disgusting than in what today is passed off as comedy.

In the comedy world where crude has replaced clever, there is no better example of the corruption of the art form than so-called comedian Samantha Bee. She has a program on cable called Full Frontal in which she spews out radical left commentary devoid of fact – and humor.

She self-promotes her own work with claims that she will have you “splitting your sides in laughter.” Then why are her YouTube screeds punctuated with those control room produced laugh tracks? While Bee’s show can certainly be considered left-wing political commentary, her performances fall short of being even mildly amusing.

In a recent monologue, Bee took on former White House Communications Director Hope Hicks. A photo of Hicks was captioned “F@*k you, Hope Hicks” – and that coincided with Bee offering up her particular brand of vulgarity. What ensued was a round of side-splitting laughter – electronically produced, of course.

Bee went on to insult Hicks for baking cookies and played the hackneyed race card by criticizing the former White House staffer for being white – sarcastically suggesting that she can now live comfortably in some other all-white environment. Bee called Hicks a bitch – a verboten word when used by men or against ladies of the left. If one were inclined to use such a vulgar appellation, it is one that may more aptly describe Bee. In closing, Bee described a scene in which Hicks is being denied entrance into Heaven by St. Peter for destroying democracy.

Without the laugh track, Bee descends into the milieu of provocative political raconteurs, spewing specious and profanity-laced screeds – a propagandist devoid of facts and parading as a comedian. If you think Bee is funny, the hate sermons of Louis Farrakhan will have you rolling in the aisles – but at least he does not pretend to be a comedian. Maybe he needs to use a laugh track.
