Young people are intelligent and articulate. Why is the left so surprised?

Having cruised through CNN and MSNBC – which I do daily – I was struck by the amount of commentary given to the young Americans speaking out against the deadly shooting in Parkland. The praise by hosts and panelists is effusive. They are soooooo impressed with these young students. They use words like “unbelievable” and “amazing.” One panelist even inquired, “who would have thought they could be so impressive?”

Ever since I passed the milestone of maturity, I have had a passion for the well being of the generations that were going to take over the world – whether we like it or not. Consequently, I have spent a lot of time on issues relating to future generations. I fight against our habit of embezzling their money in the form of borrowing to pay for our current excessive desires. I worry about the drug crisis that is killing too many future would-be achievers – and diminishing the potential of many more. I spend a lot of time defending the personal freedoms that I have enjoyed so that our historic American culture can be passed on. This avocation has brought me in touch with many young Americans of every type.

Hearing the surprise of so many media personalities makes me wonder. Are these observers and chroniclers of contemporary life so self-absorbed in their small adult bubble that they really have no sense of the younger generation? Are all those Americans who are just now on the precipice of the world stage so alien to the elitist that they have no idea of the enormous talents and capabilities of the oncoming generation?

Many of the media folks who expressed such extreme surprise have children. Do they not interact with them? Do they not see the traits of which they reported so surprisingly in their own children? Or does their liberal arrogance extend to a belief that their own children are exceptional and all those others outside the scope of their personal experiences are merely the children of deplorables?

Yes, they are impressive. Yes, there are articulate. Yes, they are intelligent. But, that comes as no surprise to anyone who actually has engaged with them. The level of expressed surprise says a lot more about the commentators than the kids. And sadly, that is NOT a surprise.
