CNN’s Alisyn Camerota in Fantasy Land

There are times one cannot help but think that the East Coast media bubble is floating in fantasy land.

That thought gained credibility after hearing CNN’s morning anchor Alisyn Camerota offer up her thoughts on solving the mass murders that afflict America.

According to Camerota, it is not enough to talk about guns – although she and her colleagues at CNN seem obsessed with the subject – or to look at mental health issues. The true culprits, she claims, are the owners of gun stores who sell the weapons used in these terrible killings.

According to Camerota, every gun store owner should ask the purchaser questions before selling the gun – especially if they are acting weird.

Really? Should there be a standard questionnaire? Did you like to kill animals when you were a little kid? Have you argued with your spouse in the past week? Have you been expelled from school? Do you belong to a street gang? Have you been depressed lately? Oh … and do you plan to shoot up a school, church, theater, concert, festival or shopping mall?

Camerota should first understand that gun stores are required to do background checks before determining if a person can legally purchase a gun – and there are waiting periods. In the case of Parkland, the gun seller did everything properly from the standpoint of the law. The fact that the Parkland shooter cleared the required background check is the fault of those who did nothing when so many saw something and said something.

Gun stores often exercise sale-counter discretion even after the background check and waiting period are over. They will not hand over a gun to a person who is drunk. Same is true if the person exhibits excessive anger or acts too weird. Some voluntarily limit the number of weapons to be purchased. If suspicion rises, they will often report the sale to the police.

This may come as a surprise in Camerota’s fantasy land, but most people who are buying guns, even killers, come across as very normal. As psychiatrists will tell you (and should tell Camerota), psychopaths generally act normal – even charming. And were a person to have evil intent, does Camerota believe they would answer questions honestly?

We have every reason to look at gun laws, mental health procedures and enforcement. We need not waste time with a silly suggestion that apparently rises from Camerota’s irrational and deep-seeded political bias.

Her suggestion is right up there with Nancy Pelosi’s plan to stop illegal border crossings by mowing the lawn. Apparently, you do not have to go to Orlando or Anaheim to visit liberal Fantasyland.
